Hi everyone, I’m not really sure if this is the right place to post this thread (sorry if it isn’t), but I just wanted to ask how people look after their long haired guinea pigs during summer. The problem is, my piggies live inside of a shed which can get quite hot during summer. I always make sure that I put them on the grass in the morning and that they have plenty of shade and water, I also feed them cucumber to keep them cool, but I’m a bit worried that my long haired guinea pig is too hot at the moment, I’d appreciate any advice 😊 💖

Sheds can get very hot, invest in a Greenhouse thermometer so you can keep an eye on the temperature, they don’t cost much. I would open but wire guard any windows, buy the fox proof type, you can get it in sheets from DIY stores and use fence U tacks to secure in place. Can you make a screen with it with wood surround for the shed door if you can’t leave it open during the day. Otherwise I would invest in a large run with UVA sunscreen cover, we have one and it blocks all sunlight out of the run, it’s great. Another consideration is moving the hutch outside aga8nst a shaded north facing wall for the summer, but make sure it’s padlocked so nothing can get in.
Give your long haired piggie a good clip for summer, it will grow back for winter and be fine

Thank you for the advice, sadly the windows don’t open on my shed, however we have a wire door behind the normal door so we can leave it open so they can get some air.

I might try giving flo a haircut, when you say a good clip do you mean giving her short hair or just cutting of the ends? I saw a video where they suggested totally shaving the guinea pig but I thought that was a bit drastic!

I’m afraid I’m a novice when it comes to hair clipping. I have a new Long haired lady we got in March, she has incredibly long and thick Flowing locks. I just cut the hair to the top of her legs. But I’m no expert, in fact it’s out of my comfort zone, I’m used to short haired 😆

haha same, I got Flo in Feb, she’s the first long haired guinea pig I’ve had and it’s been quite different to short haired guinea pigs. When I adopted her I was told “you only need to brush long haired guinea pigs once every month“. I was a bit skeptical about that and sadly I was right, it’s a bit more work than I expected but I dont really mind. In my opinion, I think they just told me that so i‘d adopt them, they’d had trouble finding a home for fifi and flo because flo has red eyes and long hair. It’s sad really because I think red eyes are beautiful.
