Long hair cleaning issues

Hello I would welcome some advice about my long haired piggie rusty.

The past couple of months her hair has gotten crazy long and particularly around her bum.

I think the hair is catching her wee and she is sometimes wet.

I do bathe her but a day or so later she's messy again and I try not to bathe often as want to avoid skin issues.

She's not poorly she's very active, eats, squeaks, enjoys cuddles etc. I think it's just her long hair becoming a nuisance.

I was debating trimming the hair at the back?

I brush and keep a good care of her hair but am becoming mindful of flys etc as its getting warmer.

I clean their cage and mats daily so it's not a cage issue either.

Yes definitely keep the hair trimmed short, particularly around the back end.
Keeping trimmed also helps keep them cool

One of my boys is long haired and the hair around his back end and sides is always kept short so it never drags on the ground (they live in my shed so are on disposable bedding and hay so can get all sorts being picked up in the hair if I don’t keep it short). In summer he also gets a rather dramatic shorter haircut all over everywhere so it he doesn’t get too hot

An Illustrated Guide to Hair Cutting

Thank you would you suggest a particular method? Clippers, scissors if so which ones ✂️✂️

I just use scissors and lots of coriander bribery!
The guide I linked in will help

I try to use clippers round the bottom area to get it nice and short although as your starting from it being long it will probably be easier to cut and then shave! I stole the OH lockdown clippers and beard trimmer in one they are the perfect size for piggies 😂

Here's Louise (1) hot and bothered, (2) clippered all over - not face whiskers/eyebrows or tummy as she likes a soft cushion to lie on. Mind the nipples! (3) One month in. It only takes about 2 months to grow from (3) to (1) but she has the big face all the way through - that can't be helped. The shorter it is the cleaner she can keep herself. After 4-6 weeks she'll need a bum trim as pee stains her rear orange to match her nose.

Louise can't bear any grooming of her longer locks as they are not smooth at all. I use rechargeable pet clippers from amazon as they don't vibrate so much as the mains plug-in ones. They were pretty cheap - maybe £20 or so? I don't actually use the clipper guard I just guess roughly where to clip and wave the thing through the fluff - this way it doesn't pull and she barely feels it. She hates the clipper guard because it's like a comb. Th first couple of times she wasn't too impressed with the process but the last time she twigged what was happening and was much more compliant than I expected - esp as the battery ran our pretty quick and I had to basically take the slow train with the scissors.

Louise didn't get a choice of hair length - she just got bred like that. I suspect from her behaviour that she prefers shorter hair as she is much livelier after the cut. You can tell when it's too long as she slows down in her movement and bumps into things more because she can't see very well. She's been my first long-haired on so it's been a learning process for us both!

If you have a look at George and Louise here you can see how her vision is obstructed! But I can't alter her face hair without trimming whiskers and eyebrows which is a no-no. She's never known any different so I just make sure I approach from the side ☺️

My hair cutting guide has been linked in above. I tried to write it so it would be easy to follow for complete novices. A bum and skirt trim is what your piggy needs. The bum trim is on the guide, for the skirts just clip it short enough so that the fur doesn't drag on the ground. Mind the feet, toes and nails when you cut the skirt as you can't see them.

Priscilla has long fur.
I always try to keep the fur around the bum short and in summer she gets an all over trim.
I use unscented, water based baby wipes to clean her bottom as well.

Yes I would recommend nail scissors to go very carefully around the bottom and nipples and back legs area, then cordless quiet pet clippers/mens hair clippers for thinning out long thick fur for the summer.
I think a few of us here use the same cordless mens beard/hair clipper on our husbands and our longer haired piggies! A number 4/quarter inch setting gives a nice result for summer :)

I use this tunnel for Finn's bum haircut. I also use plastic container as you can see below. I typically give him a bum bath before giving him his bum hair cut so hair won't fly all over the place.
