Hi, Sadly our 7 year old ginuea pig past away today and I am worried about her best friend who is left behind. She is also 7 and they have always been together as a pair. I don't know if we should get her 2 more friends to move in or leave her be, just looking some some advice on what will be best for her thanks

Hi, I just wanted to advise that you change your location from your postcode - country and/or county is really useful information, but postcodes could be a little too personal for a public forum. :)

Beyond this I can only say that guinea pigs are happiest with company of their own kind; there really isn't any amount of human company or enrichment that can replace it. If adoption and "continuing the piggy cycle" are not an option for you, some rescues offer an end of life fostering service - the forum has a rescue list which may help, found here: Guinea-pig-forum-recommended-rescues

If your little one is still eating and active you should have some time to think this through and make a decision you're happy with. There is another guide you might find helpful, found here: Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig

I am so sorry for your loss - be kind to yourself and allow yourself time to grieve. It's great that you're already thinking of your remaining pig's wellbeing, but you are also important. :)

Welcome to the forum
So sorry you lost one of your little ladies today, she lived to a great age. I think getting your other piggie a new friend(s) would be lovely if you are planning on keeping guinea pigs in your life. As said above a good rescue might help you with bonding and you would have the backup if the bond didn’t work out
Good luck, let us all know what you decide and how you get on x

You can post a remembrance for your little piggie on the Rainbow Piggie Section if you’d like 🌈

Hi and welcome

I am very sorry for your loss. 7 years is a great age but it makes the loss not any easier after all this time. :(

Here are our tips for what you can do for the bereaved companion immediately and in the longer term. As long as your remaining girl is eating and drinking, you have a few weeks' time to sort things out and do not have to find new company instantly; this should help you setting up an adoption. If your old lady prefers her own space, she will still profit from next door company for stimulation and interaction.

If you can, please consider rescue dating with a couple of younger sows or a mixed pair.
Unfortunately, there is no rescue quite nearby but East Peckham Guinea Pig Rescue or April Lodge in Sandwich both offer dating and operate to a good standard, and you and your girl will be in safe hands there.
Here is a closer look at the various places you can get guinea pigs from with tips on what to look out for and what your customer rights are as it is a bit of a minefield out there. The guide also explains rescue dating: Rescues (Adoption and Dating), Shops, Breeders or Online? - What to consider when getting guinea pigs

PS: You have unfortunately accidentally registered your postcode in a publicly visible place. For your own protection, please click on your username on the top bar, go to account details and scroll down to location. We would be grateful if you replaced it with your county so we can still give you information relevant to your area but without you exposing private information. Since we have members and enquiries quite literally from all over the world, it does help us to tailor any advice and recommendations to the country or part of the country our members are in with just a quick glance to the left.
