Hi my guinea max seems lonely but he fights with my other 2 guinea pigs so lives alone, he's a very nervous guinea pig that runs away from me everytime, cuddled with him a moment ago and he seemed ok with me and seemed quite comfy (untill he peed on me) now he's in the run but it's quite a big run and he looks so lonely, is there anything I can do to help him? scared of getting another companion just incase he fights them, I've had him 2 and half years and he was only little when I got him x

Where are you located? Could you please add your country, state or (for the UK) your county/city to your details. Any recommendations are very much based on that. Click on your name on the top bar, then go to personal details/location. thanks!

I can't find it? clicked on my name and it doesn't say that.. I'm using my mobile for this if that's what the problem is, I live in UK in bedfordshire

It is your name on the right side of the dark green top bar where your personal settings are located.

The best place for bonding single difficult boars is a good standard rescue where any meeting happens under expert supervision at the rescue and you only come home with a new friend if there has been success, so there is no risk of you ending up with a boar that desn't work out - you always have the rescue to fall back on if there are problems. You can also be guaranteed that all boars rehomed from one of our recommended rescues are already quarantined and healthy. You can find your closest rescues here: https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-rescue-locator/

I think in your case it is likely hazelcroft in St Albans or Heathlands.

See I love that idea and think it would work well, my only problem being if I bring home a new pig and they get along fine, how do I no that in a few months time if they fall out then what do I do? I wouldn't have the heart to bring the new pig back I'd want to keep him too lol then be in the predicament again too!

With an adult piggy in the mix, the chance of fall-outs is already massively reduced. When two adult boars are carefully bonded, then they the resulting bond is as stable as a sow bond.

Alternatively, you could consider having Max neutered by one of our recommended vets (or one that the rescues use). He is not too old for the op, and with a good vet, the risk of post op complications is very much reduced. He would be able to be a VERY happy husboar after a 6 weeks post op wait so he is 100% safe. Again, dating a sow or two at a good rescue removes the biggest hurdle - initial acceptance by the sows. Cross gender pairs are the most stable of all piggy bondings.

Unfortunately, there is no surefire totally safe way to find a best mate without taking a calculated risk in some way or other - but it is usually very much worth it!

Thanks for your advice, I will have to look into it some more then most likely go though with the rescue bonding place, rather than the operation! ( I'm quite protective over my pigs) I would be too scared to put him through an opp! also, slightly off topic, but I'm considering changing my usual sawdust bedding to fleece as I see it's commonly used, do you recommend any places online that sell all three layers that are suitable for pigs? I've read up about the importance of cleanliness with using fleece and going to purchase a hand held Hoover to use daily..

I don't know of any places that sell all three layers. Personally, I have found microfleece/anti-pil fleece the best for long term use and wicking power; it is not necessarily the cheapest. Some online place sell it by the metre.

You need the fleece layer on top, which you need to pre-wash to get rid of any surface sealing softener.

Below that you want an absorbent layer, but there is quite a choice from simple cotton towels to puppy pads, washable incontincence seat pads or mattress covers etc. I only do two layers; mostly towels with incontinence stuff for the sleeping areas of my groups.

Okay so If I brought some fleece for the top and just put few towels underneath would this be okay? And soft enough for their feet?

Mine are not complaining, and they have been living on fleece with hay trays (I use mostly B&Q seed trays) for nearly 5 years! They get their fleece cosies to sleep on for comfort, pampered piggies that they are...

Other members use different underlays; you have find out out what works best for you. I have quite a large number of piggies, so I have to go for solutions that don't give me a huge laundry mountain, but are still economical.

You can find out more in the housing section if you want to open a bedding thread there.

What do seed trays look like? Do you have a picture or a link? Just curious.
