Hey everyone! I just adopted a guinea pig about 2 weeks ago. It was done very last minute. I saw him in the pet store and fell in love! So I got him! Well ever since I brought him home I've been doing research on how to care for him properly and how to make sure he's happy. Well in a lot of the stuff I'm reading it seems that I should have gotten 2 guinea pigs from the same litter. I did go back to the store to adopt one more cage mate for him and it seems their all gone. He also was picked on in the pet store. I had to bring him to the vet because he had a really deep bite on the back of his neck that ended up getting infected. He also has the bite marks on his ears too. I really want him to be happy but I don't want to worry about him getting picked one like that again or him picking on the new cage mate. Would he be just as happy by himself?

I totally agree with piggyfan. Its all about the personalities. I would take him to a rescue and let him choose his own friend! Sorry to hear about his infected wound!:(

Oh and one more question. How do I put biting to a stop? He bites me all the time when I'm holding him or when he gets lap time. And it's hard bites instead of little nips here and there.

Hi and welcome!

Which country are you in? We have got a recommended rescues locator for our UK members on the top bar, but while there are some excellent guinea pig rescues in other countries, they are not as frequent.

Please give your poor little boy time to recover and time to slowly build up trust and confidence. I doubt that he's ever had much in the way of love or friendliness in his life. Try to discourage him with lots of praise and encouragement on one side and a disappointed "Uh, oh" whenever he tweaks you. He will learn. Piggies are not good with the word "no". Being calm, but firm is the best way forward.

If you have access to a very good vet with a good track record in piggy neutering, you may consider having him neutered to so he can live with a sow after the necessary 6 weeks post op wait to make sure that he is 100% safe. Finding the right vet is vital in order to minimise the op and post operation risks. The advantage is that cross gender bondings are the most stable once initial accpetance has happened and it might be more of an option, especially if you cannot date your boy at a good rescue to make sure that he finds a character compatible boarmate, especially after his bad experience!

PS: with members from all over the world, it is a great help for us to always give you the appropriate advice straight away if you added your country, state or (for the UK) your county/general area to your details. Click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details/location. Thanks!
