If I posted this in the wrong forum, please forgive me.

I recently adopted Pig from my Daughter, who adopted him from the ASPCA. She had the paperwork and I browsed thru it and noticed they had him tagged as a "Lone Guinea Pig". Evidently they had to keep him separated from all others as he would be very aggressive. If I give him lots of play/lap time will he be happy. He does seem to be, as he popcorns and makes happy sounds when I feed and play with him.

Thanks, Dori

Most male piggies are labeled as "lonely" because they fought with there first cage mate. This very rarely mean they wont get on with ANY piggies. Have you thought about taking him to a specialist guinea pig rescue and boar dating him?

Oh dear, i now see you are in the US, maybe a forum memeber from over there will be of more help, but i will try to explain

In the uk we have guinea pig rescue centers (that only have guinea pigs) So the people who run there tend to be more "in the know" than most general rescues like our RSPCA (like your ASPCA) At these rescues "boar dating" is a common practise. This is where your boar gets to meet other boars, to see if he gets along with one so you can take home the friend he choses, and he wont be lonely any more. I'm not sure this is done often in the US but we do have a few members over there so hopefully someone will be to your aid soon.

(hope that didnt sound patronising, just wanted to cover all the bases!)

A pig specialist? Sorry for my ignorance.

I think she just means a rescue that rehouses Guinea pigs exclusively (or with rabbits) as these normally know a little more than rescues that take in dog, cats, Guinea pigs, etc.

Not patronizing at all! Thanks so much! Now I understand!

Ideally, you find a place where you can take your boy to meet potential candidates, so he can make his own choice of who he likes and gets on with.

Sometimes, that can take time and a few tries, but most boars can find a congenial mate eventually. One of our members, a rescue lady from South Wales, runs a bloglike boar dating thread about her experiences. You may find that interesting! http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=59233

How old is he? If he isn't too old, having him neutered can be an option, so he could go on to live with a girl or two. However, I know that vet cost in the US are much higher, so you want to find a piggy savvy, experienced vet in order to minimise the risk of post complications. http://www.cavyspirit.com/neutering.htm

Have a look around whether you can find more shelters in your area. Personally, I would be a bit wary using places Craigslist, as some guinea pigs come unsexed/missexed and with major health problems and you can open a REAL can of worms!
