Hi my cousins friend has a lone male guinea pig I think he is about 1 year old. I havent seen him apparently his hutch is 3ft by 2ft He eats guinea pig mix no hay or veg she wants to get rid of him my cousin told her to wait until she spoke to me I said I can take him in I have a 48inch dog crate the bar spacing is about 2 inches will this be ok for him as his other hugh is falling apart Also eventually can and how do I introduce another I don't have guinea pigs but I do have rabbits so I have a little idea

Hi cam nobody help as I have to let her know in the next hour

Ive had my piggies in a dog cage. I put some more mesh round to make the gaps smaller, only a few inches from the bottom.

Piggies cant live with bunnies, but obv if you decide to take him we can give lots of advice on the best ways to bond with another boar or getting him neutered and a wife or 2

Minimum size would be 4ft x 2ft for 1 or 2 piggies

hope that helps.

Tori x

What do you mean by dog crate. Does it have a solid floor? If you could post a pic that would be great.

hi there Yes the dog crate sounds fine for the time being there's some members on here that use them for their pigs. I'd take him as it sounds like his life quality is very poor. We can help you on here to find him a friend too. Go for it. Hope his health is good even though he's not had hay. He's going to be happy with you :-) x

I'm not 100% on what size for one pig but you could have him and keep him in that temporarily if it is not suitable? You could pop a box or pigloo in for his bed.

Would you be looking to introduce another piggie to him? If so he could go "dating" which some rescue centres provide.

Other members can give loads of advice with regards to bonding....as I'm not sure if I follow the "rules" but I also have rabbits and introduced my pigs similarly to how I do theres.

Hi

I will try and give some advice, but there are probably people here better experienced than me.

The dog crate you have sounds a good size, make sure the floor is well padded with towels/blankets and then newspaper to prevent damage to his feet. Make sure he also has access to plenty of fresh hay daily, along with fresh fruit and/or vegetables but NOT iceberg lettuce (this can give them colic). Of course make sure he has clean fresh water also.

If the cage has no covered areas, throw and old towel or blanket over one end, so he can hide, or sleep in peace. Check his claws when you get him in case they need trimming- if so, this is recommended to be done by a vet, not yourself as if cut too short they can bleed alot.

Also check his fur for any mites, flaky skin etc. Anything that doesn't look right, take him to a vet. Might be wise to take him for a check up anyway, to put your mind at rest.

Good luck with your new cavy friend, and don't forget to let us have piccies!

he would definately be happier with a friend, the best thing is to introduce him slowly, go to your local piggy rescue and ask about boar dating x

I will check his nails I will be able to cut them as I do my rabbits and that :)

hi you can bond 2 un neutered males but the best way is to go to a rescue and let him pick his own friend. spayed females are very hard to find as its such an invasive op and is usually only done for medical reasons :) good luck :)

It is great that you are taking this poor boy on! He can be bonded with a young boar, especially as he himself is now hopefuly past the worst of the jhormones, but "boar dating" at a reputable rescue is the best way to ensure a good bond without you ending up with a headache of what to do if things don't work out.

Hi just rang my local rescue and they said when he is ready take him down and they will do the bonding for me are there any problems I should keep an eye out with him bot having any hay (he has straw in his bedding area ) he will be going for a vet check anyway
