A local animal rescue to me are telling their students that guinea pigs eat locusts (probably in the wild). I have never heard of this and cannot find anything on the web regarding this.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Guinea pigs are herbivores - I doubt they'd hunt down locusts

I read (I think on here) someone saying that they eat the odd insect. Probably by accident when it's on a piece of grass or something :))

As far as I know they're herbivores and only eat plants.

I'm sure I've swallowed a fly or two in the past but I don't class myself as eating them :))

I think they mean locust beans which are vegetarian and grow on a plant. They're the brown chunky things in pig mix dried food, and is my pigs' favourite piece out of the mix. They eat all the beans up first. I don't know why they are called locust beans.

That's a good point. Having kept both locusts and guinea pigs I am pretty sure that even if they weren't herbivores they'd never catch a locust anyway, and they're certainly too big for a guinea pig to eat by accident when full grown.

Anything that eats locusts tends to have super fast reactions and tends to have a grabbing ability, for example a mantid. :)
