On Thursday a bushfire started in a beautiful area called Mt Cole, and Buangar state forest. The weather conditions were awful, 37 degrees and windy meaning the fire got out of control extremely quickly.
My friend, and where Jon and I use to live at the Brumby sanctuary had to emergency evacuate with her family. They loaded up 13 horses, 2 goats, 3 dogs, 2 cats and 2 guinea pigs and all came to our place. I'm so glad we could help and accommodate.
But of course the whole situation is very stressful as there is still a huge risk of the fire heading our way to our property. We are far enough away that things are okay for now. But with the severity of the fire and the wind direction constantly changing it’s always a risk we have to be prepared for. Just one burning leaf that blows this way could send our area into flames.
But the scary thing is the friends sanctuary has been surrounded by fire, they still have about 30 horses there as well as sheep, more goats and chickens. The fire crews have defended it well so far, so let’s all just hope conditions calm down asap.
The weather is set to be just as hot for the next few days which is awful and doesn’t give anyone much hope.
Many homes have been lost as well as over 1884 hectares (around 50000 acres) of mostly beautiful bush (forest). All the wildlife loss is too much to think about.
I’m in a constant state of anxiety and just want to cry. It doesn’t look like the weather will cold down until perhaps next weekend.
The sanctuary is at the watch (googles) icon.
These are not my photos, I have been no where near the fires.
