Just a question which I've been thinking about for a little while now
do guinea pigs live better inside or out?
We've had our pigs for a few months now and they've always lived inside where I've been able to look after and play with them in the evenings as being a student I have a very busy daily life!
My parents have suddenly decided to move them outside and insist they will be fine (which I'm sure they will but I still feel it was unfair as the pigs were used to being indoors!). I am the only person who is annoyed over this and it's really made me think about what other guinea pig owners think..

Should guinea pigs be kept indoors or out? Even in the cold, winter months?
Opinions? :hmm::blink:

Hello. Welcome to the forum.

My piggies have always lived indoors and I would never let them live outside. I would worry so much about the cold. When piggies are used to living indoors it can be a shock to move them out in the winter.

It is not the right time of the year to move indoors guinea pigs outside in the first place, as they have not been carefully acclimatised and hardened off. I sincerely hope that they have got appropriate insulation etc.

Plus they get much more interaction when indoors. How many people can be bothered when it is dark, cold and wet?

mine are indoors and i personally wouldn't keep them outdoors.

it's too cold for yours to have moved from inside to out. they could very easily become poorly. i would either bring them back inside until spring, or if that isn't an option, you need to keep them as warm as possible. alot of hay and maybe a snugglesafe heatpad aswell.

I've had mine indoors for the last year which has been lovely and they're very sociable and fun to watch but due to many reasons my six will be moving into an insulated shed in the spring but until it is warmer i would keep them inside as they won't have grown winter coats and need time to adjust to the weather or they could get very sick, small animals can literally die from the chills.... unless you can keep them twice as warm outside, things like snuggles safes, fleece blankets and cosies and extra hay would help but i'd keep them in till the spring just to be safe! :)

indoors definitely. Too cold outside. Mine live in a conservatory just off this room, and they interact with everyone even the washig machine

I keep mine inside. I don't think I would keep mine outside either. Especially in the winter. If you really don't have a choice and they have to stay outside is there a shed with a window they could go in?

Hey thanks guys! I managed to plead with my parents and they are now being kept in my room (tho now there is barely enough room to walk haha!) Thanks for the advice :tu: the pigs are currently snuggling up in their blanket in their new home haha!

Hi,
Indoor piggy life is great for the piggies and for the humans. Interaction is much better and watching the pigs is better than tv in my opinion :) !
I am very lucky, my hubby is very indulgent; one of the spare bedroom s is now the piggy room , 5 boars all in one room and he plans to build them a piggy palace for an x mas present!
I know not everyone has space inside the home but I am dotty about my boys and I would never have them permanently outside, I would miss so much of their life.

Great news! I prefer indoors as you can check up on them regularly. Mine moved in the last month for the winter, and what a difference I've had from garage to indoors! Definitely a lovely improvement.

I agree completely! I absolutely dote on my boys haha I love them to bits! So I'm quite enjoying them being in my room as they now just have their cage door open in the evenings when I'm here and they just run around my room and come in and out their cage as they please! I love watching hop in and out the cage haha!

Mine live indoors all year round. Love the interaction we get from them being inside.
