Freela
Senior Guinea Pig
Sadly, our sernior ham, Apollonia, passed away overnight. She was just over 2 years old. She was pretty spry right up to the last three days or so, when she got progressively weaker and passed in her slip in her little hamster house. Definitely very peaceful for her and that's a whole lot of comfort to me. The hardest thing is that she actually belongs to my son, who is away for school, so I'll have to tell him the sad news long-distance and I feel terrible that he'll have to be sad all alone there. He was the best 'dad' a little hamster could ever have and he loves her a lot. It's just hard and the distance makes it harder.
Apollonia was the NICEST dwarf hamster in the world. The dwarf ham we had before her was a lean, mean, biting machine! But Apollonia was very friendly, very curious, very outgoing. She loved people and would come out to see anyone (unless she was eating and then she was all business, no socializing!) She loved running on her wheel and had a rotating 'favorite' out of her seed mix and we'd always have to figure out what it was... she loved sunflower seeds for awhile, then pumpkin seeds, and lately it had been the little baked nuggets in the feed. She loved millet seeds as a treat. I gave her one the first day I noticed her being weak, on Friday, and I'm happy to say that she ate about 95% by the time she passed.
She was a sweet little girl and we were blessed to have her for almost two whole years (we got her in early November of 2022.) We got more time with her than we expected, even more than with a couple of our Syrian hams. She brought so much to our family and we will miss her and remember her forever.
R.I.P. Apollonia. No arthritis where you are today and all the millet seeds you can eat. We love you so much.
