My pigs have 2 liter trays in their cage, 1 under their hay and 1 under their water bottles. At the moment I'm using megazorb in them, but I was wonderiing what else I could use. I've looked online and some people say that they use cat litter (wood based or paper based), but I was wondering whether this was safe for them. I'd also like something that won't make such a mess on their fleece, and also isn't too expensive and will last a while as I am on a minimum wage apprenticeship rate so I don't have masses of income.
Any ideas?

I'm using wood shavings at the moment, because they used to live on that and are now on fleece, and as a result I have an absolutely ma-HOOSIVE bag left to use up.

However, my preference is wood pellet cat litter. You can buy unbranded stuff from pet shops/supermarkets etc. I do believe it to be perfectly safe; it's silica-based litter that is NOT safe for them. The wood pellet stuff is basically super- compressed wood chip. When they wee on it, I find it absorbs then disintegrates into very fine particles that settle to the bottom, leaving the top layer pretty dry.

I imagine paper-based is also fine, since there is plenty of paper-based litter out there specifically for small animals, but the small animal stuff is generally expensive for what you get.

You have to be careful with wood based litter as some brands are very dusty. I use wood litter in my trays, I just use the one from ASDA. There is little dust in it, only a bit at the bottom of the bag, but I just use a sieve on the last bits to get rid of it.

When I had litter trays I had puppy pads in them with hay on top and change it every day or every other day. Easy peasy, just roll it up,no mess on the fleece. Don't know if its too expencive, I used to buy it in bulk though. Or what about easibed? That's cheap and wouldn't spill on the fleece much...

I've tried hay and I personally don't like it. I've just googled easibed, and it looks like it's be the same as megazorb with messyness, but I don't know.
I want something that won't be carried around the cage so much, if that makes sense.

I'm having the same trouble at the moment,

ive just got two guinea pigs on monday, my first and i'm unsure how to train them as they have a large cage so its taking lots and lots of wood shavings to keep it clean!

If anyone can advise me it would be appreciated :)

Thanks
