Not sure if this is the right place to put this but ... I am just curious if it is possible to train my boys to go in a litter tray of some kind ... Mainly because I like to go round their cage and pick up any poops each morning so its easier to clean at the end of the week (they have fleece blankets instead of woodshavings) and I was thinking if i could get them to do their poops in the liter tray then it would be easier and quicker (I'm a student and soon my lectures are starting again so I may not have enough time to clean them in the mornings like what I've been doing .. ) So what do you guys think? We managed to train the rabbit to go in a litter tray so I thought maybe try with the boys too?! Or are piggies untrainable when it comes to doing their business xD ?

Yes and no but basically not really. haha.

A guinea pig can never be fully litter trained like a cat or rabbit, if they're at one end of there cage they will not travel to the other just for a poop.

However they can be partly litter trained BUT not all guinea pigs will go along with it. If your piggies already use one corner or area of there cage to go to the toilet it's likely if a tray of bedding is put down and you add a few poops in they will go in the tray and you can just empty that daily but the rest of the cage will still have poops that require sweeping so to me personally it's not really a gain in getting them litter trained.

My two are young and tend to pee in the same area, They tend to poo where ever they feel like Pooing lol. Maybe they enjoy seeing me clean it up constantly. I swear I see Hopsy smirking. I don't know about training them? But if you manage it please let me know!

thanks guys thats awesome ... I will give it a try it's just their poops they can wee where they want cus they are gonna get cleaned anyway but their poos take ages to get up cus there are so many scattered round the cage haha ! I will try anyway puttin some woodshavings maybe into a tray and see what happens :'D if they dont click on after a week or so of trying then i will stop paha ! but thank you both ! and will let you know how i get on!

Hi Mel105,

I have four little trays and put carefresh in them and they do alot of their poos in the same two corners and only a few on the fleece, I just take the litter trays to the bin throw it out and re-fill morning and night..

I didn't like it all fleece as they love big piles of hay and getting the tiny bits of hay off the fleece was a nightmare. I now have half fleece and half newspaper covered with a thick carpet of hay and my guineas and I love it as they can now burrow again but don't really pee on the fleece now and the hay is off the fleece.

Alot happier.

Silly

I tend to find that mine will poop most in dark or covered areas like under the pigloo or in their boxes. It may be an idea to cover the litter tray with something i.e one of those wooden arch things or a piece of fleece or towel, even a cardboard box.

Hope this helps.

P.S. I also fill my litter trays with hay as that encourages them to pee in them too (for some strange reason) I suppose they just go while they're eating :{

I found the girls will seek out the trays to wee and poo in, but will also do it in their beds and just for the sake of it, but on the whole if they were near the trays they opted for them.

The boys (including flash and silver) just went where they wanted, although the two boys inside do sleep in their litter trays like the girls do, so will find a fair bit of mess there and change that most often than the whole pen.

Mine would be partially trained but I just stuck the litter trays where they would spend a fair bit of time so I didnt really train them.
