Hi,
I just wanted to get a little feedback on my piggie cleaning routine. We’re new owners so I’m reading loads and learning lots!
We have a 2x4 c&c cage with a loft (although they are still a little nervous of the ramp so it’s downstairs only at the moment!) I have made some fleece liners with mattress protectors and we have a litter tray full of hay. I line the tray with newspaper, but have also just got some finacard to use as well on the recommendation of the rescue centre.
I currently do a 2/3x a day sweep of poops and completely clean the litter tray every morning. Throwing out all the hay and paper and giving new. Full clean once a week. Does that sound right? Should I being doing more? Less? Should I chuck all the old stuff daily or just top up and chuck every other day? (The hay and paper). They have a hay top up in the evening as well, but then we’re throwing a fair bit away the next day. I’m ok to continue as is, but wasn’t sure if I could/should leave the hay for longer.
Hope that makes sense. Sorry it’s so long!

I have a similar set up with the hay trays but I use newspaper, a wood based litter and then hay on the top. I've found with this combo the hay trays last 2-3 days (I have 4 hay trays for 5 pigs currently). I tend to just top up hay and sweep poos daily, as well as feeding of course :)

I use newspaper and wood shavings in the litter tray. With 2 guinea pigs I find it needs cleaning every other day. Poo sweeps daily and full clean weekly. I'd say you are doing great and don't need to worry about doing a bit less if you want to.

Thanks for your replies. So, they don't mind if I leave the hay for a day then and just top up? Even though they loooove to poop in it? That would just make my school run easier. At the moment I do a poop sweep and then complete hay change before the school run. Which is doable, but a little bit stressful when we're running late.
Although I do love how excited they get when the hay tray is taken out, refilled and replaced.
And although they are still scared little piggies who run for cover at the slightest movement, for some reason the broom is a source of absolute fascination and seems to hold no fear for them. And I've even had to give them a very gentle prod to be able to sweep where they are sitting! Piggies, I am learning, are a law unto themselves! :)

My pigs get just as excited with their hay top ups so they should still be happy! I don't think they will mind at all :)

It's funny isn't it, most my pigs are fascinated with the dust pan and brush, Bella especially. She follows me round the cage trying to nibble at it and making sure I do a good job and get all the poops. Like my superviser :))
