Hi guys,

My 2 guineau pigs have a cage setup whereby they live in a log cabin and have a litter tray at the opposite end of the cage.
The pet shop said to try putting the wet sawdust into the litter tray before I try the expensive bags of litter.
My problem is that they seem to be hell bent on peeing and pooing in the corner of their log cabin.
What is the best way to train them to not pee/poo where they sleep?

Regards,

Paul

Litter training guinea pigs can be classified between hard work and impossible... Some seem to be more talented, but if yours seem hell bent on doing their business in the log cabin I would say you are already lucky as they have at least chosen ONE spot! Mine go all over the place.

Can you put the litter tray in the log cabin? (or it it's big the other way around...)

I agree. Put the litter material whether it be a tray or an extra fleece pad, where they poop. People make cozies with removable washable pads for those piggies who don't want to get up and go to the outhouse in the middle of the night.
Unless you give them an incentive (like a little bowl of veg) most pigs are not going to walk over to the area where you have decided you want the litter tray to be.

We adopted our little Gertie this weekend and are trying to work out where she is going to the loo, Then we will sprinkle litter there and see what she does. We have so far managed to train about 6 of our 8 hamsters (if only the wouldn't put their food in their litter too) but not so sure Gertie will be so easy.

Don't get your hopes up too much for littler training with guinea pigs!

Some are very tidy, but the vast majority simply isn't and never will be. Peeing and pooing in the sleeping place is very normal.

Now HAMSTERS, that's an entirely different story! Good luck with Gertie though, it's not impossible!

out of my 5 boys there is only one who doesn't pee or poo in their bedroom

jake likes to poo as close as he can to a food bowl have no idea how he does it as its in the corner of their home

oliver well he just stores it all up ready for my daughter getting home & poo's about 11 times in a row (think he does just to swow off!)

they both poo in bedroom usual as close to the edge as they can not good when i'm the one digging it out :)p
