I just wondered how many of you have piggies that you have either trained to use a litter ox for seeing and pooping or whether any have done it naturally? I would like to see if I can try and train my boys to do it in one place so any ideas welcomed!

I tried when I first got guinea pigs but they could not get the idea at all so I gave up. I think guinea pigs will poop everywhere and it is just the way they are!

Although not quite the same but I had a rabbit who we where given from a friend she was about 2-3 when we got her and to train her I would scoop up the poops and pees and place in the litter tray. It did not take to long and this was change every 3-4 days because it can get smelly :) hope this helps x

I have a litter tray under the hay rack with a piece of puppy pad and bit of hay on top and the girls do a lot of wee's in it, within 2 days it is saturated, but they do also wee elsewhere sometimes. As for poo's, jeez they poo EVERYWHERE!

mine do seem to poop and wee in their litter trays a lot - but they also pee and poop everywhere else too! I keep putting the trays in though, thinking it is reducint the amount of cage mess even if they do some pees in the tray

I gave mine a litter tray and although there were a few wee's in there, they just used it as a bed mallethead

Same here. Then there were fights over who got to sleep in the litter tray, so I bought a second one. Still did their business everywhere else though. I even caught Peanut Butter dropping a poop as he waddled over to his litter tray to lay down. He didn't even stop, it dropped as he was still in motion. In the end I took them out and decided cosies made nicer beds.

l find its funny that cage piggys tened to go to toilet any were, but free range all go back to their indoor toilet ,which is one of the 4footx 2 foot x2foot green and grey garden shedbox ,that is attached onto their main 10foot run.no matter were they are in the gardens they will return to their toilet room.
l started free ranging them 3 1/2 years ago because l have 1/3 of an acre of ground, and did,nt want to lawn mower the grass because of all the frogs and slow-worms in it,so let them eat the grass and weeds adding their waste to help the grass grow. but they dont,.it must be what they do in the wild as they are preyed animals. so that they can,nt be tracked down,to become dinner.think its a bit how battery hens that have never seen sunshine react when they are give freedom ,will start digging and foraging, and dust bathing. its in them to do it.survial.

That's really interesting! You may be on to something there. Oh well, I've learnt just to live with a poopy looking cage for most of the day.

Mine generally use their litter trays to wee in, but they will poo anywhere. I find they will wee wherever there is hay though and they will usually go somewhere dark to do their business so it helps if you can cover it somehow.

Hi, thank you for all our replies. I'm happy for them too poop anywhere really as its dry and easy to move but they have started to wee everywhere but there log cabin! I find I'm changing the main areas they wee in their hutch once in the morning and then once in he vending as it gets quite wet in there and I don't like them to be in a damp cage. I have to say the do tend to wee in hay so maybe I will put some hay on a puppy pad in a small tray and see how that goes.
