Hi,

Is there a best way to try and train piggies to "do their business" in one place of their home ?

Mine seem to be getting better but I was hoping that I could stop them from having a wee or a poo in their bedroom bit so that I could use fleece/vetbed etc without having to change it too often - this does however seem to be down to a minimum but really wanted to stop it totally (as far as possible).

Any advice would be great

They're not like rabbits in that they don't know they're pooping so can't really be strictly litter trained, however they do tend to poop where they eat, so if you have a hayrack for example, you could place the litter tray under the hay rack and it would catch the majority of the poops.

Some are 'cleaner' than others but most tend to go anywhere and everywhere!

Thanks Sophie.

Mine did start to go an awful lot in their sleeping area when I first got them but I have noticed over the last week or so that that area seems to be more or less dry and only a few poos lurking around - the rest of the hutch looks like a "poo war zone" but thats not a problem.

Maybe in the winter I could just place the fleece/vetbed in their sleeping area and see if they use it to mess on still?

Is it just a case of putting the little tray somewhere with their usual megazorb in and seeing what happens?

ive litter trained most of mine now and i did it just by providing a litter with newspaper and hay and then as often as i saw poo's,i placed them in the litter, this seemed to encourage them to use it,just make sure it doesnt get to full with poo as they tend not to like dirty areas x

i am going to try and start litter training my girls this weekend, my foster piggy is so so clean and poos only in the corner!

I am totally new to keeping piggies although i do have rescue ones but don't mind where they drop. I give my girls a nice little pink litter tray on Sunday and popped it next to the hay and so far so good they are using it. I see a few stray ones when i get home but not sure if they are kicking them out or not using it.

Anything is better than nothing i guess :)

I sure wish i could get my girls to poop in a tray! lol I have however noticed that they only wee under or in front of their ramp...as it is in the corner...lots of poops there too...but basically....Poops are everywhere! lol

I have to disagree :)) My pigs are fully litter trained, including poo's. Whereas my rabbits happily only wee in their trays but poo everywhere! No idea how the pigs trained themselves but very pleased they have xx>>>

My 4 pigs are between 1-3yrs and up-til me lived on a full base of newspaper and hay with no litter training but they picked it up astoundingly fast. Ours have a viynl floor with megazorb in their trays (then the hay that falls from their racks) so I'm guessing they don't wanna pee on a floor which splash's back. No promise they won't pee or poo on fleece hehe as I know our rabbits would when they have a fleece bed. Our pigs are getting some fleece items soon so will see what happens ?/
