Litter trained piggies

So I brought the ferplast 160 and because it’s so big I made the piggies a ‘garden area’ at the bottom where I put all their hay. Surprisingly they’ve now started to their business in this one area so I’ve started using it as a litter corner. I’ve been using newspaper to line it just so it’s easier but are magazines safe to use too? It completely took me by suprise as I’ve been told litter training guinea pigs can be almost impossible yet they’ve done this themselves!

What you are experiencing is not litter training. Litter training is training them to go to the toilet in one area regardless of their situation. If you put hay in another corner of their cage but left the tray where it is they would most likely stop using it as their toilet and wee and poop where they eat lol

We have 1 completely litter trained piggy who likes a nice toilet corner tray but the rest of the gang just poop where they are, hay in, poops out! So we have 3 hay trays which fill up with poops and get changed daily. These are just lined with newspaper with hay on top because we change them so often. Glossy magazines are much less absorbent and often have plastic in so arent really safe to eat... have you thought of asking your neighbours to collect old newspapers for you to use? We started doing that then we decided we didnt like looking at underwear models on the floor of the piggy cage so we just buy a daily local paper just for the piggies! I like to try put newspaper articles about Donald Trump and Boris Johnson in the toilet corner though, I think Piggle appreciates it

They will come out of their hidey to wee and poop there then go back in. Yes they eat their hay there and poop and pee too but they’re using it regardless of whether they are grazing or not
