I read somewhere that it is possible to train piggies to use the litter pan and I'd like to do this if it is true, to make it cleaner for them and more cost-effective for me. Will they learn to do it on their own, similar to cats? If not, how do I teach them where the "bathroom" is? Also, what should I use as litter? Will it be easier for them to differentiate the toilet from the rest of the floor if I use a different kind of bedding?

Hi,
Unfortunately it is difficult to completely litter train piggies due to them weeing and pooing around the clock as they graze constantly. I've found mine mainly use the litter tray if it is in a corner and also next to their hay rack as they spend a lot of their time there. It definitely helps to have a different substrate in the litter box...one they are used to going on...when I changed to fleece I kept wood shavings (which used to be their sole bedding) in the litter tray. They didn't always use it but now they do most of their wees and poops in there...they still poop in their beds where they sleep but tend not to wee which helps when you have fleece bedding :))
So basically you can try but not that many piggies do great at litter training but fingers crossed for you!

I'm not sure if they are as 'trainable' as cats or rabbits, but I have a massive tray which covers the back quarter/third of my shed. They mostly toilet there as it's where the majority of their hides are. So I'm really just following their lead rather than training them! They toilet where ever the hell they want when they're in the indoor pen!
