Hopefully this is in the right place.

I have recently moved to fleece bedding and I am really impressed with how it is working. A lot less smelly that is for sure.

At the miniute I have two small litter trays one for food and the other for hay. To soak up the urine I use wood shaving type stuff.

Not keen on using this anymore for the pigs health and also the mess it makes and difficulty cleaning bits from the fleece.

Can anyone suggest an alternative that won't create such a mess?

I am also after a high sided tray so that it keeps the hay in one place as much as possible.

Any ideas?

How often do you change the litter trays? I am going to be having a litter tray when i get a second level to my cage and am going to use wither shredded paper or newspaper in it and just empty it everyday, i get unlimited shredded paper from work so its not going to cost anything.

You can find many different litter trays with different heigh sides just depends on the brand so i guess it's just a case of keep looking for something that you like.

The bedding i'd recommend is a type of cat litter, i've tried Back 2 Nature bedding which is a wood pellet and found it very good and not too dusty, another option could be carefresh or megazorb ! (:

If your getting shredded paper from work you want to be careful about the ink it may have on it etc. and also shredded paper could cause paper cuts, i'd say just newspaper is the safest option as they use a special ink which is natural, well most do.

After various experiments, i tend to make a newspaper and megazorb 'sandwich' (megazorb filling) in the bottom of the hay tray and then hay on top. You can get megazorb from horsey suppliers - it is wood pulp product and very absorbant for wees. The layers of newspaper just make changing the tray quicker and stop the megazorb getting onto the fleece as much. But worth experimenting and see what works for you

We use cheap toilet paper in their "loo" areas. It's mostly just for pee because they generally poop wherever they want. I do have to clean this out everyday though.

I use just cheap cat litter trays (the cheap ones tend to have high sides), and use a double spread of newspaper folded to size with a single layer of wooden cat litter pellets on top. I find it really effective and change it every 2 days.

i use plastic seed trays. i line them with newspaper and put a layer of hay in them. i get the seeds trays from a shop called hootys in willenhall. i get 2 for 99p and i change them every morning & evening. they have their hay racks for hay to eat but will eat so much of the hay out of the trays until they have been to the toilet to many times in them:)):)) then they just lie in themrolleyes

I have the wooden pellets I use for my cats. Do they actually work for guinea pigs? I thought it'd deter them from the area more than anything, I'd like to use the wooden pellets with hay ontop, might be easier? x

My hay box has kibble in it too. I put some newspaper then hay, but I think I will stop using newspaper and just hay.

have you seen the hay cakes or whatever they are called in hootys. they are cheaper there than anywhere else - £2.69 i think they are. i went into wilkos in bloxwich yesterday and had a fantastic bargain. this time for the cats. they have the felix 6 pack of tins on offer at £2.75 instead of £3.52 but they had them priced up wrong on the computers and we were charged 9p for the three packs that we had (18 tins). the cats are very cheap to feed this week:))

My lot seem more than happy to go in there to be honest, their hay rack is over it and the pellets soon get covered in the hay that gets pulled from the rack anyway.
