Hello, i rushed my almost 6yo girl to the emergency yesterday because i could see her tummy bigger on one side and when massaging, it would make a sound like a water of bottle. So she has liquid in the stomach causing her pain.
Vet did xray and saw the liquid on the scan. I asked her to provide furosemide to help my girl expel the liquid but vet said that furosemide is causing dehydration and besides, furosemide is causing the body to expell the liquids in the rest of the body but not stomach. Vet said, after consulting with other exotic vets, that a tube needs to be inserted through her mouth, in the stomach, under GA to take out the liquid but she told me the risks it impplies. I am petrified, i don't want to lose her. Is it true that furosemide will not cause the expell of the liquid from the stomach? I am based in Romania so i cannot have acces to more experienced vets

Sorry to hear that your piggy is poorly. I am sure one of the Health Experts will be along soon but for now please read this guide on the forum.

Since they refused to provide her with furosemide, they kept giving her fluids under the skin and it she was peeing non stop. I saw her yesterday and she was so full of liquids but no more liquid in her stomach could be heard. I got my hopes up as i was waiting for her to expell all the fluids but this morning got a call her situation worsened as her glicemy went down and she was on glucose now and she was retaining the liquids instead of flushing the out. So they took a blood sample and did the bio chemy and came back liver problems. She is on liver medication now but vet said that now it's up to her to fight to pull it through. I feel so bad ... She's been poked with needles endlessly for 5 days now and i feel so bad for tormenting her like that.

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry. Liver, kidneys and smaller organs in guinea pigs are very difficult and only relatively new to diagnose in guinea pigs; nevermind to medicate. They are currently still right at the cutting edge of veterinary ability and it is therefore rarely straight forward. There is also not yet much in the way of effective medication. :(

Really sorry about the ordeal and the limited options your vets can give you. The more veterinary medicine can push the horizon, the more difficult and tricky it seems to get... :(

My fingers are very firmly crossed.

I’m so sorry your piggy is poorly. I hope the medications work. Sending them healing vibes. ❤️
