I currently have my 2 girls(both 4 months old) in a Ferplast Cavie 80, which i know is too small for them. I would love to do them a big C&C cage but its just not an option with an over-excitable dog and cat and i don't have the room.
The cage is currently on the dining room table which isn't ideal at all(still living with my Mum so can't take over anymore space).
I can't really afford a whole new cage so would like to make use of the cage i have. So does anyone have any inventive ideas of how i could make the cage i have bigger? preferable upwards rather than wider. Could i add another floor on?
I hate the thought of my girls being in a small cage but can't think of how to make it better for them. I have a bit of money i would use, its just the space issue.
All ideas appreciated:)

I was going to say maybe add a upper level, but i have no clue how you would do it? Maybe have a look on the gallery of cages as I'm sure that someone added a extra level to rabbit 140 cage, so maybe you could copy that idea?

Also if you dont have much money maybe try a local free-cycle site or look in the local ad trader for a cheap cage? Or if you have a rescue near you they sometimes have cages that they sell cheap.

Hope you get something sorted. :)

We received four of our cages through freecycle and gumtree so it is always worth asking!

I have been looking for another cage second hand but they have all been either the same size as my current one or the door is at the top which i don't like as my 2 are squirmers and i would never get them out of the top!
Will look at the thread thanks.

I have asked my Mum about a longer cage and she says we don't have room for it, so ideally i need a taller cage with different levels. Thanks for the link though :)
I would also like to make use of my current cage if possible.

I'm sure you will be able to add a upper level, i think H&L done it to her piggys cage too. So it can be done. :)

I will definitely look into it :) Ideally i would attach there playpen to the cage so they could come in and out whenever they wanted too but just haven't got the space for it.

Good news- i persuaded my Mum to let me do a trial run. Basically the cage is now attached to there big playpen so they have lots of room to run around. There was a lot of popcorning going on and running around like mad pigs :)
It doesn't take up too much of the dining room either so hopefully we can keep them how they are now.

Good compromise with your mum :)

If she doesn't go with it long term, then this cage is the smallest store bought multi storey one that I have seen, but is slightly wider (20cm I believe) than the one you have now, but then the same again upstairs. You would need to adapt the ramp a bit (put a barrier of some sort just incase you have jumpers like mine!). Both levels have doors on the side as well as the top one in the picture.

The only problem would be if you did go for something like this if you can't keep them in the run combo, is that if your piggies never went upstairs, they would only be getting the floor space of one level which is still on the small side.

It seems to be working out at the moment but its early days. They keep getting between the cage and the edge of the playpen which is really annoying. I shoved a toy down the side to block it but they just pulled it out! little rascals :)
I wasn't at all hapy with the cage before as it was too small, i felt so bad for them squeezed in there but now I'm much happier and so are my piggies :)

Just an idea, but why dont * just get rid of the cage and let them stay in the play pen?
Then there will be more space for them! :)

The water bottle and hayrack won't attach to the playpen, only the cage. And also they like to be protected and snuggle up in the cage.
Also the cage is really new and if i can make use of it, i will.
Thanks for the idea though.

I'm glad you've made use of your cage and made more space for them - I'm sure they love it! I was going to write that going upwards instead of outwards wouldnt really work as they need floor space.....but your current set up really works! :)
