Hi there, very new, inexperienced and paranoid gp owner here.

We got 2 gps for my daughter last week. The initial plan was for them to go outside so we bought a 2-storey outdoor hutch. We now can’t face the idea of them being outside so we’re going to keep them in the playroom.

I have 2 questions: first, is it ok for them to be inside but in an outdoor hutch?

And how much light do they need? The room they’re in doesn’t get much daylight (especially in the winter) and after about 7pm we don’t really use the room except to check on them. Should I leave the light on in there until we go to bed, or do they prefer being in the dark? Seems like such a daft question, but I hate the idea of them being stuck in the dark for too long!

Mine have natural light from the window from close to sunrise to sundown. Then i leave them in pitch black from about 11pm until i open the curtains at about 6 or 7am

Well hello there and welcome to the forum.

First, congrats on asking questions, any questions really.
It's not daft to ask.
I wouldn't worry about keeping lights on in the evening. They will be happy for the nightime. Hutch is also fine for inside too.
do your room have windows at all?
also can you add your location too?

Hi, thanks for the replies.
The room has patio doors, but they’re a bit blocked up with stuff at the moment (moving the pigs into that room was a bit spur of the moment so we need to have a clear out..!).

I’m from the South West and will be asking many questions in the next few weeks/months!

Truro?

My boys are in a cage in the living room, so the lights go off when we go to bed (around 11.30).

:wel:I'm new also to the GP seen and my original plan was the garage and like you i couldn't face keeping them back there lol. But the research i have done is they can see in the dark and i've noticed when the lights go out at bedtime i here them running around and i hear them pushing their little balls around the cage . so i think yours will be ok to:). and there are absolutely no bad questions :) i have asked so many questions in the past couple weeks since i've become a GP owner. and everyone on here has been so friendly and helpful. :)

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on getting piggies. An outdoor hutch used indoors is absolutely fine and very practical.
Piggies are crepuscular meaning they are most lively at dawn and twilight. They have great ability to see in the dark. Mine live indoors. During the day they have daylight. I leave a light on for a few hours early evening (for my benefit not theirs) then turn it off later. They are very happy with this arrangement.

Don’t ever feel daft asking a question. We don’t mind at all Have you read our helpful guides? Here is a link.

Congratulations on the new additions! I'm sure they'll bring you a lot of joy over the upcoming years! It's so nice that you have a space for them inside. Using a hutch inside is absolutely fine! Maybe in the future, as it's a play room, you could create a play area from then infront of their hutch and make a ramp coming out so that they have extra space outside their hutch too, this would also help with the dark situation. My piggies are in my room and so they kind of just get the natural daylight from the window during the day, and as far as night time goes, it really does depend on how much time I spend in my room, if I'm downstairs, the light will be off, they don't seem to mind either way tbh, but as your pigs are new to their surroundings, sometimes I find darkness helps them to settle
