I'm sorry that this is very long but I wanted to try and include everything.

My guinea pig Boromir had surgery to remove a bladder stone last week, I followed the Vets advice and started to filter his water, removed nuggets from his diet and only gave him very low calcium veggies (cucumber, baby corn, peppers and a tiny bit of tomato). He was a little slower to recover than the last time he had bladder stone surgery which was only a month prior but on Saturday he really came around, begging for food and his usual chirpy and happy self. The vet also said Cystease which I gave him about 40% of the capsule mixed in with water on Saturday was a good idea to prevent further stones. I was also told Oxbow Urinary Support would be a good idea, I started that last Friday giving him one a day. I woke up Sunday morning and he was hiding away, his cheeks wet from water that had been rolling from his eyes, breathing heavy and feeling bloated. He hadn't touched any of the food in his bowl. I took him to the vet immediately and he said it was stress which to me seemed weird how he would all of a sudden become stressed after being very happy and social with the other guinea pigs when I went to bed. I was prescribed Metacam 0.1 twice daily, Baytril 0.2 twice daily and 1/4 of a capsule of Cystophan daily. That night was absolute hell, he wouldn't eat, drink, move or poop. I stayed up all night with him as he breathed heavy and couldn't open his eyes. I syringe fed him Selective Science Recovery which was given to me by the vet and it wasn't until 4am he finally pooped which he had struggled with all day. The poops came out dry but covered in a mucus, but they gradually improved as the night and morning went on and started to look normal but slightly undersized. I took him straight back to the vet the next day and I felt completely dismissed if I'm going to be honest, with even suggestions that I was being paranoid. They did palpations of Boromirs stomach and said his stomach was fine, ruling out any complications from surgery, bloat and stasis. They said they were happy with his progress and that Boromir was recovering excellently and he was in brilliant health. I raised concerns about Boromirs yelling when his stomach was touched but they said Boromir was not in pain but was rather screaming about the anticipation of pain that he never felt. I was very concerned about the size of Boromirs abdomen so they did end up prescribing 0.5 of Emeprid which would be taken twice daily. I awoke every two hours during the night to syringe feed him Selective Science Recovery as he will not eat, nor move on his own. I'm still syringe feeding him today (Tuesday) and he still has no desire to move. I tried to encourage him to run around on the carpet and I noticed that he was having a real hard time using his back legs, they kept slipping to the side like he was on a slippy floor. Every time I pick him up he has diahorrea on his bum, I'm not sure he even knows he's pooped and he still seems to let off a little oooo if I handle him too close to his stomach. I'm very concerned about him and I'm tired of being told that I'm being paranoid by vets, there is definitely something wrong with him. I feel really out of hope, there's been multiple times over the last few nights I thought he was going to pass away. He's down over 100g since surgery, he's now at 860g. I don't know if it's my ignorance but I've never heard of stress that doesn't kick in until 5 days after surgery and causes this amount of weight loss. Any help/advice appreciated

How is it feeling now? My guinea pig had a surgery too.

He's really not good, he recovered so well from the first surgery that you wouldn't have even known he had surgery. The second took some time, but he was really well then all of a sudden he wasn't. I hope your guinea pig makes a full recovery

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m sorry your piggy is so unwell. You are doing an amazing job of trying to keep him going with the recovery food. I don’t have experience of this issue but it definitely sounds like something is very wrong. Please try and get him in to see another vet. Good luck. Keep us posted. Someone with more experience will be along soon.

I had a piggy years ago that had a stone which he managed to pass himself. But he was in a lot of pain and he couldn’t walk very well. I don’t know if 0.1 ml of metacam is low? @Piggies&buns do you know?

Is it cat or dog metacam? Dog version is three times stronger than cat. If it is the cat version, then yes it’s low and he could definitely have more if he is in pain - although only a vet can give any dosage advice

Maybe get a second opinion for more pain medication.

Thanks, I did thankfully did get a second opinion. I was told that the Metacam and antibiotic was the cause of the drowsiness so they didn't want to increase his dosage of any medication. I was originally prescribed 0.2 of Metacam once a day but after I asked about possibly raising it they said change it to 0.1 twice a day. Boromir doesn't act like he's in pain laying down, but if you touch his belly he seems in pain

I’m so sorry to hear this.
Can you get him to a different vet? It definitely sounds that there is something wrong.
Diarrhoea is an emergency. Please don’t give him any veg, just stick to offering hay and syringe feeding him but most importantly getting him seen by a knowledgeable vet

I hope he is ok

Thanks, I'll try harder to find him another vet. He's on his 3rd vet, it's really hard to find a quality guinea pig vet. I've tried giving him hay, yesterday he really picked up after coming home from the vet and had some food willingly but it was short lived and he went back to needing to being syringe fed within a couple hours

I can’t add to the advice but wanted to offer support.
You sound as if you are doing an amazing job.
Holding you in my heart ❤️

I just want to update, Boromir began having fits and lost his ability to move of his own free will. He began crying almost as how a baby would cry so I made the tough decision to have him put to sleep. I'm absolutely devastated, he was my best friend

I’m so sorry you lost Boromir. You did all you could for him. Popcorn high at the bridge. ❤️

I'm so sorry you lost him, I came to find your thread after you commented on how I lost Ellie. You did the very best for him xx

Sleep well Boromir

So very sorry.
It’s a painful decision for you, but it was made out of your love for Boromir.
You did everything possible for him.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve

I’m so sorry you have had to let Boromir go over the bridge, I can imagine just how sad you feel at the moment. Your final decision was made by the love you have for him, he will have known just how much you loved and cared for him x
Sleep tight little man 🌈
