Our boy Finnie does this so does Midge our dominant sow. I've always presumed its just another way of identifying whose around. Much like dogs sniffing lampposts and trees.
My guess would be particularly if a boy is doing it, it may be related to the hormones and scents a female is giving off.
Rosie is one for doing this also if they are on a hard surface, she has always been an odd one. It may be something to do with her poor sight and maybe it is a way of knowing whos who.
