Hi All,

Does anyone know if Lice grow? I have Twinkle, Milo, Radley and Flora with them at the moment. I'm still waiting for Lice N Easy. Peter had a Paypal account where the money takes a week to come out so that should be done tomorrow with any luck. I've been using a brush on them daily and that has helped but while cleaning the barn yesterday I noticed large dark coloured 'things' in the hay that had claws at the front and were about 5cm in size. I know head lice on us grow I had 30 in my head at one time when I caught them off Emily...lol But is it the same for pigs.

Also with Lice N Easy is it shampoo first day and then 7th day and should I do all 10 pigs? And also is there anything I can do to help them while I'm waiting for Lice N Easy?

Thanks!

Louise

The "things" sound more like earwigs to me, rather than lice. They can make themselves in the piggy hutches ... love to sneak under the hay and paper. I've got them in the bird aviary!

Lice grow yes, but they are not 5 cm long!

Hehe just realised I meant 0.5cm long which is 5mm I'm so dumb! :D If I saw something that was 5cm long I'd freakin' run out of the barn! :D

Mary no they don't jump from pig to human. They have come in off the hay AGAIN and I changed my supplier! Little imps!

Thanks guys! I think this 0.5cm things are the adult lice but I've none on the pigs, just the little riddlers. Fingers crossed the shampoo arrives today. Thankfully they are not bad with them but I won't them gone. :)

There seems to be so many cases of lice around this year - I blame the weather!

I would do all 10 pigs both times to be on the safe side Louise - will blitz the horrible little crawlers for sure then!

Thanks Kate will do. :) I'm finding the meadow hay is fine but its the stalker stuff that has the lice! Poor Milo has them in his crown. :( I've trimmed his fur right down to make him cool and brought him and Twinkle in.

This weather is too much, they are all so hot. And I've hayfever today...lol

I expect the shampoo will be here Saturday at the latest.

Peter is laughing at my 5cm lice! :D

Peter is laughing at my 5cm lice! :D

I have just read this thread and I thought 5cm! OMG! My mind is in inches but I know that 2.54cm is an inch from wordprocessing. I imagined huge 2" lice crawling around on the floor in your shed. :(|)

I will get back to reading the thread again now I have got over the shock!
Glad someone else posts something and realises that it actually wasn't what they meant to say .... I thought it was only me! :)

ROFL Goldie it's not the first time I've done this I actually had my pigs down as weighing 5lb once. Maths isn't my strong point. Thank God for online weight and length convertors...lol :D

Yeah i think you have to shampoo all pigs as like headlice transfer from human to human, they can crawl from one pig onto another.

Thanks yeah its Milo who has them quite bad but can't see any on Twinkle his cage mate. Flora has them but can't see any on the other girls and Radley has them but can't see any on Sunshine. the only pairings not to have them is Pudsey and Eccles but will do them too. I will do them as I change their bedding too.

Also is lice n easy ok or rabbits? Harvey hasn't used this hay so I think he is ok will check him again though but Tika has! :)

bath time for piggies

looks like you will have a busy time bathing all the piggies, maybe have an assembly line where one washes, one dries, one cuddles and one feeds.
as for lice n easy i would perhaps email christine and ask her or to whom you got it from, as they should know, it might say so on the bottle .
sorry can't help you but never had lice and jolly hope we don't.
hugs to all especially to poor milo:)p:)p:)p xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>
enjoy your piggy bathing weekend:)):))

Thanks Mary, did have an email from Chrissie to say thanks for the order so looks like it is on its way now! Will email her later over the rabbits. Peter is off for 2 weeks from Sunday so I can wash, he can dry and Emily can feed them...lol If it is nice they can go in the garden. :)

Yey it's arrived! Just bought other hay its not as stalky as the one I have been getting but it has no lice in as far as I know so will stick with this and give them more willow balls to chew! Thanks for all your help! x

Oh dear sounds worrying! i have had some lice probs and they dont grow very big at all.Could be some sort of a bug? i dont think that guinea lice go ino hay but I'm not positive.could be what we call sheep keds

I don't think those larger bugs are anything to do with the lice just something in the shed but I'm going to give it a good scrub on Monday. :) The lice do come in on the hay it's mites that don't. It's a minor problem nothing major to worry about and I have located the source as being the hay I bought so fingers crossed we can sort this out now. :)

hope its all sorted soon, I know from experience what it was like bathing all the pigs in one go to get rid of a lice infestation!! tiring!!

Just a sugestion we have a tea tree based cream which we used in conjuction with a insectisifal shampoo for small animals when Belinda had lice she started to bite her back this cream helped heal the bites and keep lice away

Thanks. I'll use the shampoo and see what happens from there. :)

Found the source of the larger bug problem they are earwigs! Yuk! So gonna clean the shed out top to bottom on Monday! Just my luck it will probably rain!...lol

The bug you described sounds like ticks to me. They have claw like things at the front. My cats get them alot. They attach themselves to the skin and suck the blood.

We used to get lots of earwigs in the bath at our old house. They would hide under our flannels. They were disgusting!

For some reason I thought they were much bigger than this but I think I am thinking of cockroaches...lol I need to study the bugs!

Well it's bath day today and it is very warm here. So I'm hoping to get rabbits together full time and all pigs back in shed. I have an allergy to the pet dander so can't have them in full time even though I've tried many times.

Should be fun bathing them, another busy day ahead! :D
