Hello everyone! I recently rescued a long haired guinea pig. I took her home and was checking to make sure she was well enough to be placed with her new sisters. Unfortunately, it appears she has lice. We have a vet appointment scheduled already. I just wanted to know how far I should keep her cage away from the other guinea pigs and if the lice can stick around post treatment. Thank you for any knowledge or opinions!

Hi!

Please always quarantine any piggy over 4 months ideally in a separate room when you get one from a dodgy background.

Parasite treatment consists of several rounds of ivermectin that run until the parasites have gone. It is not a one-off affair.

Please take the time to read this very useful guide here which also deals with quarantining aspects: New Guinea Pig Problems: Sexing & Pregnancy; URI, Ringworm & Parasites; Vet Checks & Customer Rights
