Hi, I am hoping for some advice on how to treat my Guinea pigs lice.

I noticed about 4 weeks ago that my two boys had lice - I used a spot on treatment initially, which seems to have worked for one but I see today that the lice have come back in the one with longer hair( he is part silky and had a bunch of long hair on his bum - he’s had a trim but not enough it seems).

I was thinking I need to take them to the vet to get a medicated shampoo or similar- but we are self isolating as my son has covid…

So my question is can I buy something online to treat him? Or can he wait 2 weeks to see the vet- I have noticed him scratching a bit
( no coat or skin damage yet but I want to sort it ASAP).

what would you recommend? Thanks

Please do see a vet for the correct diagnosis and treatment.

Lice are visible, pale crawling creatures which feed off piggies blood making lice something which need treating properly ASAP.
Mites cannot be seen. You can only see the mite egg casings which usually fasten to the back end of the piggy.

Unfortunately using a pet shop spot on product is ineffective. They aren’t strong enough (pet shops cannot sell prescription medications) meaning the issue is perhaps suppressed but not eradicated and therefore returns. A full course of ivermectin (three treatments two weeks apart) is needed to fully deal with the life cycle of mites.

You also need to exercise thorough hygiene in throwing away items which cannot be washed, including changing your hay source and thoroughly disinfecting the cage.

Can somebody take the piggies to the vet for you?

Hello. I’m treating my two boars for mites at the moment. Can you call your vets and have a telephone consultation? Tell them what’s been going on and I’m sure they would prescribe the necessary medication for you. Then someone could pick it up for you? It’s usually a spot on treatment every two weeks for 6 weeks (3 applications in total). You have to do all piggies together. Throw away any cardboard hides and wash bedding on 60 and disinfect the cage with a good quality disinfectant. I use F10 from Amazon. Hope that helps. 😃
