Hey everyone,

I bought a baby guinea pig last week on Thursday... and today she is covered in lice. I have had her separate from my other guinea pig. Since I have noticed the lice, I have moved her to another room. I have also called they vet, but they won't get back with me until tomorrow.

What can I do in the mean time? How should I was the fleece bedding? What should I do/give to my other guinea pig to prevent the spread of lice? Any suggestions?

When you go to the vet they will correctly diagnose your piggy and provide the correct treatment, usually ivermectin, to apply. They may give an injection initially but you will need to treat one week apart for 2-3 weeks. Please also clarify to your vet the number of piggies you have and the weights of any others so that treatment can be prescribed for them too though they may not be willing to do this without seeing the pig. TBH if she is covered in lice I would expect the other piggy to already have them so you may have separated unnecessarily. Check your other pig closely, parting the hair to check for lice. If you find some I would put them back together so they don't get lonely and take them both to the vets.

Everything will need disinfecting and the fleece bedding will need washing on a hot wash. Any wooden items are best cleaned with F10 disinfectant
