While i'm sat here covering my arms with Antihistamine cream and soaking the cuts to both wrists I thought I would post you some pictures.

I took in 4 rescues yesterday, from a family who couldn't cope with them anymore as a member of the family is seriously ill. Two of the 5 month olds have never been picked up before and don't I just know it. But despite that, these people, think these four piggies are happy, healthy, fit and well......Ummmm....well no!

3 of the 4 (not the golden one, which seems strange as they live together) are smothered in lice and eggs like I have never seen it before. You can basically scrape the eggs off with your finger nails and the lice can be seen running around without having to part the fur.

Do some people really believe this is natural for guinea pigs to carry this amount lice.....well yes, they do!

The most covered part for the eggs is inside of the hind legs, so here's the pictures for anyone who wants to go running out to their hutches just to check they are lice free.....

og that is awful, those poor piggies. how can anyone let their pets get into these states.

That's horrendous - looks like some of the kids at my youngests school that are over run with headlice.

How do you deal with lice in piglets? Can you wet comb them like you do with kids?

I used a shampoo from GG, I asked Chrissie first which was best on the age of my piggy, who was 5 weeks, and she told me how much to use, and special directions for him as it was different for those above 12 weeks

That is absolutly discusting! How could they let them get like this, poor little thingsgrrrr

Thats awful, poor little mites.

Some people just have no idea, it drives me mad! grrrr

They are in safe hands now

sending wheeks and kisses xoxoxoxo

For the baby pigs under 12 weeks we use just the Neem from Gorgeousguineas. In awful cases with babies we have used the Lice n easy but only applied it to the worst areas and then used neem for the rest.

Adult pigs get a good shampoo with Lice n easy, then a covering of neem. This is then repeated a week later and it normally works.

It makes me cross that people let their piggies or any animal get into that state grrrr It's good to know that they have a good home now with you M&M.

That must be really horrible for the piggiees ... my head is itching now!

Imagine having a itch that you just can't get to scratch ... not nice at all! :(

When piggies have lice are they scratching a lot? Maybe a stupid question but the previous owner to my piggies told me that they did have lice once but they got it cleared up so i have always been on the look out...

Also how do they get them? Looking at those photos has made me all shivery... Poor piglets...

These piggies have been scratching a lot yes. Thankfully not to the point where they have wounded themselves by scratching. Lice can be caught because of a number of reasons. Maybe because of poor hygiene or cleaning out or maybe because of the hay or straw used. These guys were kept on sawdust and hay. One pair in a 3ft hutch, the others in a tatty 4ft hutch.
Lice are very common and easy to get rid of with the right products but this case has astounded me as i wonder how bad it would have got before they realised something was wrong....probably never if truth be known, as they have never been handled.
The pictures shown are of the eggs that remain after yesterday's bath.

I think this is a really helpful post especially for anybody new to keeping piggies.

That's shocking. I've not had to deal with lice yet (touch wood) but now I know what to look out for, but I hope it's never on that scale!
