I was reading in the guinea pig room today and suddenly heard Chloe squeel.

She was jumping about like mad and one of her hind legs kept kicking and moving about like it had a live of its own. I quickly grabbed her and put her on my lap and she seemed ok - no more kicking about. She was teeth chattering for a while, then gave herself a shake and was completely normal again. I put her down on the floor and she had a wee run around the room before going back into the cage and sleeping.

I hope her foot might just have fallen asleep and it's not something more sinister. She's been loosing a lot of fur lately but i think she's just shedding her winter coat as the hair doesn't really appear to be thinning out much. Will have to keep an eye on her...

Has anyone witnessed any similar behaviour?

Maybe it was lice or mites causing intese irritation? I don't know :-\

yeah it could be mites and you mention hair loss it could be all connected? :)

Have been thinking about mites and lice but she hardly scratches at all. Just really puzzled about the whole thing :o

are you sure she isn't just popcorning?

giver her a thorough check for any sores or reddening of the skin. If she seems irritated or scratching a lot it could be a skin irritation but jumping and shaking is often a sign of excitement when they have been let out or given fresh hay.

It was definitively not popcorning. I've never seen any of my guinea pigs do anything like it. She seemed quite in shock of what was happening at the time.

I picked her up tonight and she was asleep. Her leg was giving her a bit bother again. Not as bad as last time. She just kept shaking it for a few seconds and then it was ok again. She seems to be walking ok as well. Just seems to happen after she wakes up. I've check her leg and it seems absolutely fine and she doesn't appear to be in pain.

Will keep monitoring it and if necessary take her to the vet.

Thanks for asking.

She hasn't done it again. She's really healthy and happy. It must have been a bad dream or maybe a cramp in her leg from sleeping too much. rolleyes

That's good news. It was probably cramp just like we can all get it I guess animals can too. :)
