My guinea pig always has hay in his cage, however I notice there is a lot of hay always left over, especially in the hayracks and the hay tunnel I have for him. That hay just sits there and he may pick at some of it but otherwise he just goes to the other hay that is in the box. I was wondering why? and if there is anything I could do so that hay does not go to waste?
thank you!

Welcome to the forum

The hay you throw away is never wasted!
He may not have eaten it all but he has played in it, run through it, peed on it.
It’s just part and parcel of piggy keeping - you are going to throw away some hay. He will forage through and pick out the nicest and tastiest bits, use the rest for the purposes I have stated above and then will want you to refresh it again.

Do also bear in mind that if given the choice between hay in a hay rack and hay which is loose in a box, most piggies are going to choose the loose hay in the box. This is because hay racks restrict their ability to actually get right into the hay and to be able to forage through it easily. For that reason we don’t recommend the use of racks.

Does he have a friend? Piggies are highly social and need to be kept in pairs

thank you very much, as you can tell I am new to the guinea world. :) I got him at a rescue, and they said because he came as a single guinea pig (from the owner who had to give him up) that is how they are adopting him out due to they don't know if he is good with other guiinea pigs or not. so that is what they told me so I was just doing it that way

This is a great place to learn about all things piggy.
Your boy has clearly landed on his paws being rescued by such a responsible, caring and loving person.

It’s a shame they didn’t try to bond him before rehoming him.
It would definitely be worth you looking into finding him a friend

Morning and welcome.
Guinea pig's are very social animals and need friends to make them as happy as they can be and yes you do feel at first what a waste of hay but to your guinea pig it hasn't been wasted in the slightest. Do get rid of your hay rack so he can tunnel into it and have fun and the same for veggies or nuggets sprinkle them into the hay so he can forage for it rather than being put into bowls. There will be lots of links on here about all topics including bonding your guy with a friend and everyone will always offer as much support and advice as they can 💐
