Hi,

I aquired my ferplast 120 cage today and I am really pleased with it for my two guinea pigs I will be getting soon.

I am using fleece and towels for the bedding as it would cost a fortune to put sawdust etc in such a big cage.

Does anyone know if I can just use towels then the fleece on top as I don't like newspaper...?

Thanks

Yes, you can - although I prefer a light layer of newspaper at the bottom. It depends how big a towel layer you are using and how often you change your cage. If you change regularly, there shouldn't be any problems.

I would strongly recommend that you cut the fleece or get a fleece blanket in such a way that it hangs over the edges of the bottom tray, so you can trap it with the top piece of the cage. That way, you can avoid your piggies burrowing under the fleece.

I use one of these plastic rabbit corners from p@h as a hay tray/littler corner. I do put a bit of wood chippings on the bottom, then cover them with a layer of cheap hay. I tried megazorb but I hated the dust and my hubby the smell of it in the living room. You may want to put the hay rack above it - for some reasons piggies love to do their business while munching on hay! mallethead

Alternatively, you can try and get a metal barbecue rack of the appropriate dimensions and tie that in with cable ties in order to create a hayloft.

Thanks wiebke,

yes I will do that:)

I like the idea of the hayloft using a barbecue rack I hadn't thought of that!

You could also try washable absorbent incontinence pads under the fleece, they last for ages and they are well worth the money.

Here are the ones i use.

Just an idea as i know many members use them now. :)

I used towels with no newspaper before I got the pads that J&G mentioned, it worked fine. I used two or three layers of towels (because I used a floor area that didn't match the towels. Wiebkes tip about letting the fleece hang over is really good. For claening you can just take it by the corners like a sack and carry all out to shake before washing it!

Those washable inco pads are called Kylies. We use them on beds of incontinent elderly in my sector.

Just thought you might like to know:p

Great advice thanks! Like the idea too about the bed pads, and hey are washable so will invest in some of those:)

Got some fleece £2.99 for two large squares which I can cut down in ESK bargin!

I like the idea of the absorbant pads as well, how often do you change them?

I change mine once a week, I have 3 piggies in each cage. I have the ones designed for human use as well. I think the disposable human or puppy pad ones need changing more regularly.
