I also own a dog as well as piggies. I feel so sad that my piggies don't get out on the lawn in their folding run. My dog is a boy and only pees around the edges of the fence and on bushes, trees etcetera. Is it still dangerous to put my piggies in their run in middle of the grass. I have never seen my dog pee there. Also grass has been mown 3days ago.

I have piggies and own a dog. My dog does wee all over the grass, so to avoid them ingesting any grass, I lay down fleece and peg it to the edge of the run. You have to make sure it's securely down because if yours are like mine, they'll try and find a way to get to the grass. I'm planning on growing grass in trays so they don't miss out.

Aww that's a really good idea. Grass in trays. I could use plastic litter trays. Thanks for the idea. I might have to wait till next year to grow it though.

Hello
I own a dog and have never really worried about this issue, it was only recently that I found out it was a problem! My dog does have a toilet area, so no "mess" on the lawn area, but he does wee around the place. Its a big garden so I don't worry over much though, and tend to move the run after it has rained like Squiggles.

I would like to see the evidence of dog wee being poisenous to piggies please. I did a thorough search and found no conclusive evidence of this. My piggies go out on the lawn and the dog has peed all over it (although not recently right where they are as the run hasn't moved for 2 wks) and no ill effects so far.

We have a large garden and have always had dogs & piggies at the same time, with absolutely no ill effects. I keep the run away from the dog mess areas, but I know the dog wees all over the garden, and all my pigs have been fine!

I didn't know know it was a problem until recently. In the 4 years we've had a dog and piggies, we haven't had a problem either!

What do wild pigs do? How do they know not to eat grass ect. That a fox or stray dog would have peed on?

So I have dogs to be safe how long days ect would I need to wait to let the pigs on it if I section off an area for the pigs.

I am not wishing to advise anyone wrongly or put anyone's pigs in danger, but just wanted to say that I have had piggies since I was a child, am 37 now, always had dogs and cats as well, and admittedly have been blessed with large gardens but have never worried about this and have never had any problems - my piggies have mostly been a long lived bunch *touches wood madly*. I think I might be concerned if I only had a small patch of lawn that there was a lot of contamination though.

I would be really interested to see the evidence - are there any vets on here who can advise?

I have a fairly small garden. I would not put them the grass with 2 dogs and 2 cats. But I have a small section, behind my cat proofing, which is clean for the piggies

My dog has a "toilet area" - he has been trained to use this area which is important to me as I have children who run around barefoot in the garden, it was easy to train him to use this area and its only the odd wee that goes on the shrubbery really - maybe people could train their dogs to do something similar!

I put them on the lawn yesterday as max only pees around the edge of the garden, and toilets in a certain area. They were fine. They hid a lot of the time though. ;(image.webp

I have a run very similar to yours. What I do is peg a fleece over the top and it also drapes down the sides about a quarter down. It makes the pigs feel more secure and comfortable and they love coming out to explore :)

They loved the grass but only Alby came out the hidey for a bit to explore. And only because I called his name. Fudge wasn't for budging at all. Lol.

I use to have a dog, a staffie - when I got him the guineas and rabbit had huge rectangular runs - when our dog was about 3 he started jumping on top of the runs - he ignored the rabbit as he started off charging at the run but my rabbit Leo was really feisty and kicked Jed through the bars so after that he kept away from the rabbit but use to wait and pounce on the guineas run.
I swapped the rectangular runs for apex ones as Jed couldn't jump on those which worked but I always supervised guinea run time. Jed never cocked his leg by the runs - always the edge of the garden - I was more concerned about the dog eating guinea pig poo!
Never had any problems other than the dog dive bombing the guinea pig runs but worked round it with getting the stronger apex runs.
Next doors dog keeps coming through the hedge - he's shown no interest in the guinea pigs as he's been through since a puppy but I'm fed up of him now as he makes a run for it when he hears our back gate so as they are not doing anything I'm going to put short fencing under the hedge our side to keep him out - cant risk him getting run over.

Someone else on the forum said it was poisonous. May have been @Wiebke can't remember.
If I was a pig though, I wouldn't be impressed to eat grass that's been peed on.

Dog pee is poisonous to guinea pig; fresh pee can (and has) killed. We sadly had to deal with cases where it has happened on here. :(

Please fence off a grazing area for your guinea pigs.

That's terrible poor dog. They should block off the fence so it can't escape.

ok thanks I will make sure the dog hasn't peed where the guinea pigs run will be placed. Or I will place a cover on the grass.

When I first put my GP outside, he hid, because he wasn't used to it. But I put folding outdoor chairs along the sides of his run, cause they block the view and it makes him feel abit more secure, and of course sitting next to the run talking to him or even just being there, he gets confident and walks around, and now he will stomp about the run even if there are no chairs up and if I am not there (though I prefer to have some chairs there just in case). I think also put him out gradually, like an hour a day, then two hours, then three etc, so he wouldn't get too exhausted by the experience. I never bothered putting a toilet out as his pee and turds fertilize the lawn. I don't think dog pee is a problem, it dries off in the sun and gets diluted at night by the dew and if it rains at all. I have never heard of any urine being toxic unless in huge quantities or if its infected with disease.

I bought a large wire run and tent pegs to secure it to the lawn.
Cut lawn under it 3 times then let piggies use it. My dogs cant wee where they play / nibble now.
