So hi guys it's me again (Mo's mummy). I just wanted to say to those who saw my thread on his 'squeaking while peeing'I haven't heard him since the last time he did it but he does still do calcium deposits. Would love you guys to drop the best and healthiest brand of pellets I could try that might help with this.

On the subject of friends- I'm getting one! Yay it's taken awhile after an unexpected vet visit for a possible URI, a friend who sadly passed away and other piggies that have been rehomed before I got a chance bit I'm finally getting one. I still feel terrible that despite all my research I didn't get Mo with another piggy and I never got one quickly after that. But now he's in his bigger cage and I hope healthy- just want these pees to be 100%- I am going for it!

I really want another boar because I don't want him to be neutered just in case he does pass under the anaesthetic. I've read all the threads on here and know I should go for a younger boar with the opposite personality to Mo- in this case I'll be picking a skittish one because Mo is very very sassy and a rumbler. I'm not putting them together as soon as I get him home Ive prepared Mo's old cage which he will be in for a week just to check he's 100% healthy and to let him settle in. Then I'm going to totally clean Mo's cage which they'll occupy together - I'm going to get a Midwest or C and C so they have the best space possible asap- and let both boars meet on my floor.

Now I just have some queries:
1- is it alright for them to meet on my floor. It's the biggest bit of space that is safe where they can do their thing etc but Mo has been out on it before. I'd there anyway I can make it neutral or will this not work?

2- once their bonded will putting them on the floor where Mo has his floor time disrupt the bond?

3-I want to get one from a rescue but if for any reason I don't or it doesn't offer boar dating what is the best thing to do?

4- I would really love a long haired piggy. I realise these require grooming and trimming in the hotter weather but is there anything else I should know that may be different in a long hair to a shorter haired?

5-would you like pictures when I get him? Lol

I highly recommend boar dating at a rescue - even if it means travelling a distance .

We've had a lot of debates about pellets - if you are really concerned, it may be worth trying a grainless brand - @helen105281 is the best person to advise. personally, I would limit your usual brand to an eggcupful per day - and try to stick to the daily veg on our diet thread ...

Recommendations For A Balanced General Guinea Pig Diet

I haven't tried it yet but JR Grainless is one I've heard a lot about so I want to try that (when the next pay day comes).

1) Yes, you can always disinfect it and use some white vinegar if you're worried.

2) Nope shouldn't do :) Again you can clean it if you're worried.

3) To be honest, I can't think of another way without a rescue. I'm sure other members would be able to help in your area.

4) Apart from general up keep, bum trimming (any time of year) and bum washing I can't see that there would be loads of difference but I haven't got a long haired piggy myself.

5) Yes yes yes and yes. Did I mention yes?

I would start with feeding less of your usual pellets and then slowly transition to grainless if he will eat them. The JR farm ones tend to be a bit better tolerated than Bunny. Vitakraft was the best one but was discontinued.

Unless your floor is part of Mo's regular territory (i.e. he has daily run time, in which case I would stage intros elsewhere on a fleece), it is OK.

Try all rescues within your reach - it is really worth travelling further and if necessary waiting a little bit longer. We are coming up to the time where the Easter impulse buy shop boys hit the teenages months with the inevitable fall-outs and loss of interest, Easter sow shop pregnancies are due (so there may well be baby boars, too) and piggies are dumped left right and centre in the run up and during summer holidays. That usually fills up rescues and should give Mo hopefully a bigger choice a bit later on. To my knowledge, both Wood Green and Healthlands offer boar dating. ;)

Piggies that have been bred from smooth/rosette piggies have finer and straighter hair than piggies that are based on rex type breeds. The latter have hair that acts like a sponge and they require daily daily grooming - they can also do with a full short hair cut in summer as their fur coat is thicker. Keep hair around the genitals and the bum end short at all times.

Mistletoe and Jingle are abyssinian crosses and have long fine hair, esp Jingle. They need regular bottom trims (which they are not over impressed with) and bottom baths too ... again, not impressed. Jingle has recently let me stroke and stroke her while she sits on my lap munching salad. I love her long fur.

I travelled over an hour each way to get to a decent rescue. They are utterly wonderful.

Good luck with your new piggy when the time comes.

Thank you all for your help! I know I should've got a friend alot sooner and that's something I'll always feel bad for but hopefully Mo will forgive me once he gets his friend. Already got name ideas lol. I've always wanted a piggy with longer hair and I know they require grooming etc but I'm happy to put in the effort and extra bum baths so long as Mo is happy- Mo has quite alot of bum baths now due to his active grease gland so it'll be good to have a buddy to bath with!

Thank you @Wiebke I'll be sure to post a picture once the friend is home so long as the right one comes along. :) cannot wait to have another furbaby

I got one!! Not longhaired but he is sweet! Little crested boy all white with a brown patch around his right eye- and a right squeaker! He's in with Mo at the minute. We did have a nipped ear but now we've got humping, rumbling and nibbling. The baby not too keen on the mounting but if Mo stops he just runs back up to him. Mo seems shocked. I'll upload pics later.
