After my lovely Captain passed away, I adopted a rescue guinea pig from the local Dog & Cat Home. I've had him 5 months and he is a happy boy.
Noticed two nights ago that he had an angry sore on the back of his testicle. Took him to the vet las tnight and it is an abscess. She squeezed it and the gunky pus came out. Larry didn't even flinch. She thinks he has jabbed himself with hay and it has got infected. Anyway, no operation required (phew!) as it is an external abscess and is easily located.
So, I am armed with baytril, probiotic and a bowl of warm hibiscrub for bathing / flushing. He had his 1st dose of baytril last night and he seems ok with it. My previous pig had a bad reaction to baytril so I have always been wary of it and preferred Septrim. However, my vet has encouraged me to try baytril again with fibreplex to ward off the side effects.
I've had bad experiences with abscesses in the mouth and jaw, so to have one in a different place is actually not as daunting!
Here we go again!
