Hi. I have 4 female guinea pigs (2 x 2yr old and 2 x 7 month old). They were all getting very large and at the end of Sept (6 weeks ago) my oldest two Biscuit weighed 1380g and Maisie weighed 1260g. ( I weight them every 6 weeks when I cut their nails). So I cut back their veg and cut back their pellets and I also fitted a ramp and gave them the run of the room for exercise. Ive just cut nails and weighed them and the weight loss is worrying ! Biscuit is now 760g (Weight loss of 620g in 6 weeks. Maisie is now 900g (weight loss of 360g). Does this seem a large amount of weight to lose in such a short time. Especially for Biscuit 620g ! Now I worried that Biscuit is underweight. She looks fine, is eating well, is interactive, has shiny eyes, glossy coat, and normal poops. Should I be worried? Any advise appreciated.

Hi

Please feel around the ribcage whether your girls are a good weight for their current size or whether they are underweight (feeling for the 'heft' or BMI). The absolute weight loss is meaningless without that context because your further actions will depend on the outcome of that check.
Weight - Monitoring and Management (see chapter 3 for the how to and the relevant details)

Are your guinea pigs indoors or outdoor piggies and are they protected against the cold?

Please also review your diet, depending on your BMI hands-on check.
Long Term Balanced General And Special Needs Guinea Pig Diets

We cannot really help you with more suitable advice unless you know where your piggies stand; whether they are OK in themselves or not.

Thanks Wiebke. I will go and check my two older ones bmi using the info you sent. Thanks for the info xx

Once we know whether your piggies are in a good weight range for their sizes or not, we can then give you further advice and support that is tailored for your specific situation.
