Hi everyone,

Yesterday one of my guinea pigs (Peanut) got into a big fight with his brother. Afterwards, I noticed that Peanut's butt has a very large open wound on it. It almost looks like the skin has been peeled off and is bleeding/very pink. I couldn't really get super clear photos of the wound due to its location, but I did get some pictures from the side. I'll be taking Peanut to the vet tomorrow because all our local vets are closed over the weekend. So far his appetite is still normal, although his poops are looking smaller than usual.

What should I do to take care of the wound before we go see the vet? So far I've been wiping the area with clean water and applying human antibiotics (like neosporin). Is this okay?

Also, do you think Peanut will need stitches or painkillers when he goes to the vet?
Thank you in advance.

All you can do is keep the area clean with a saline solution until you see the vet.
The vet will make the decision on whether stitches are needed based on how open the wound is, pain killers can be prescribed also.

Have you separated the piggies? Sadly, such a fight will break their bond so they can’t live together any longer

Keeping it clean is good. Don't use neosporin, as it may contain antibiotics that are toxic to guinea pigs when ingested, and he potentially could reach that wound and ingest some of the ointments (the website guinea lynx has a good list of unsafe antibiotics, check the content of the neosporin there because it may have different ingredients where you live than where I live, as drug compositions can vary.) Best of luck at the vet!

Ouch that does look sore. I hope you get on ok at the vets. I'm sorry your boys have decided that they don’t want to live together anymore. ☹️

Hi everyone, thank you so much for your advice! We took him to the vet on Monday and he's healing well. The vet gave him some antibiotics to tape and used some surgical glue to close the biggest part of the wound.
