Hi everyone. So recently I moved house along with my 12 pigs. Long story short. My new landlord wants me to move my pigs outside... they have always been indoor pigs so I'm very nervous.. I will insulate the new hutch in as many ways possible to keep them warm. They are my baby's so I have to be sure. But will it be safe to move them outside at this time of year. I'm so nervous but don't want to rehome any of them. It will be heartbreaking. Plz help with suggestions on this. I wil do anything...

How long have you got? If it's possible you may want to try gradually introducing them to the outdoors, and increase the amount of time they are out for. It isn't usually recommended to move them outside in winter, but if you take enough precautions it should be ok as a last resort. If possible buy a hutch cover to help with the wind and rain, or you could insulate with bubble wrap or polystyrene. Use lots of bedding materials, such as hay or fleece. Good luck :)

Easiest thing would be if you can get power into the shed and have a little oil filled radiator in there, I have one in my shed and even during the coldest weather, inside my shed is nice and toasty. ;)

:agr: an insulated shed is a good option if you need to keep guinea pigs outdoors . Like BossHogg - I am fortunate enough to have a power supply to mine so I can have heating when it gets cold - and lighting for the dark evenings .

Would you be able to get a shed @jammybaby ?

I have an insulated shed and the rescue that my boys are coming from want me to have heating for them. Good plan. Getting the electrician asap.

I you only have a hutch home and roost sell hutch insulators and hutch covers which would help a lot. Best of luck. 12 guinea pigs, how lovely!

Have they said why they want you to move them outside? What has changed from when you moved in? If its to do with mess then could you not tie into the agreement that you will have the house professionally cleaned when you leave?

Second the heated shed, I have one with an oil filled radiator and I think overnight its actually warmer than the house (don't tell husband that though!)

Hey, don't fret, I'm sure with everyone's help you'll have a shed cosier than your own bedroom. How sad that you have to move them outdoors though, I'm sorry:(

hmm tricky one, mine moved outside in the summer when it was time for them to move permanently outside. I second looking at the gradual increase in exposure to outdoors especially as the weather has dropped so much. Another way of building their resilience if you have a spare room would be to turn the radiator off in that room and leave the window open. It will make your house colder for a while but could help them adjust more easily than short bursts in the cold followed by getting thoroughly warm again

Thank u all for your replys. Unfortunately I can't get a shed untill our garden is finished as there's justhe no place it would go. My garden is awful atm. Needs landscaping. I do have a stone shed but I'm worried that will alot colder than a wooden one. It does not have windows iether. They are all still cosy inside atm. Untill I'm sure they will be ok they are gonna stay indoors. They're all my babies and I won't sleep if I think there's a chance they might be cold. I will take pictures this weekend to give everyone a better idea of what I'm working with. I do appreciate everybodys reply so so much xxxxx
