Move this if its in the wrong place anyone!

Because of a family fall out (thankfully not within this house for once!) - I am going to have a VERY quiet xmas ::). I was planning on getting a companion kitten for my 6 year old cat in January to miss hectic xmas period.

Because its only going to be us 3 in the house things will be no different than normal. So I am contemplating getting a kitten before January.

If anyone knows of a young (8weeks pref) female kitten in or around this area could you please give me a nudge.

Its good because there's none in the papers except really expensive pedigrees - hopefully shows that more & more cats are being neutered these days :)

Regards

There is a massive unwanted cat/kitten problem in the North East of England, despite the heroic efforts of welfare/rescue workers :'(
I'd be surprised if it isn't the same in most areas.

Kittens may be thinner on the ground at this time of the year, but do try your local cat rescues, look in the Yellow Pages for details or ask your vet if they can point you in the right direction.

Now the rescues tend to be full of older kittens and adult cats, young kittens are much more readily available in the spring and Summer. But you can find small, rescuue ones all year around. We once had rescue kitttens born here on Boxing Day...how I miss cat rescue ;)

Good luck,
Barbara

Here is a list of rescues in nottinghamshire:

AARU is who I foster for.

Are you thinking of getting a kitten because it may be more easily accepted by your current cat? If so you may be suprised....out of all my fosters I have had the only one Worm absolutely HATED was a tiny kitten called Ralph. I think adult cats do not cope well with the introduction of a kitten because kittens havent yet learnt the rules of being a cat- Ralph would constantly run and jump on Worm, just in a friendly way as she wanted to play, and whilst Worm is a playful cat she really did not like this at all.

I currently have an old 12 year old cat called Jasper who Worm has accepted no problem and there has been no aggression at all.

Worth trying the rescues first...or www.admag.co.uk is adverts just for nottinghamshire.

Thanks for that MTP, i did want a kitten so that she would accept it easier. It didn't even cross my mind that this wouldn't work!
I'm not having much luck anyway.

Hi Hils, the temperament of the cat should also be taken into account. I had 4 old cats and when a lady at work had a kitten and her daughter was allergic to it, I had it. Archie was so full of himself and immediately made it clear that he was here to stay. He is a little sod - don't get me wrong, he is lovely, but the only cat I have ever had who jumps onto the work surface in the kitchen (which I hate). He even escapes out of the windows if he wants to go out and can't wait for me to open the door. Earlier this year one of my older cats was attacked by a dog and killed. It was extremely upsetting and we felt unable to have another cat. Then a couple of months after Gus died, a friend mentioned that her sisters cat had had kittens. After much discussion, we decided to offer one a home. We were also mindful that we had 3 old cats (one is practically blind) and one young cat and thought it might be nice for Archie to have someone to play with. We got Bruce. Well, he is the exact opposite of Archie. Runs if he hears a noise, spends a lot of time lounging around and even though he is now nearly 9 months old, he has only ventured about 6 foot from the house! Archie loves him and spends lot of time grooming him and playing with him. The older cats also like Bruce. They hiss at Archie, but not Bruce. They obviously do not see him as a threat. It might be worth considering having a cat who you know is laid back and won't be seen as a threat to your cat. If you have a kitten, you don't know what it will be like until it matures. Archie and Bruce couldn't be more different and yet we had them at similar ages and they had the same upbringing! Hope this helps and I hope you find a new addition to the family. Karen

I have had a kitten here before with my cat - kind of an on-official foster I suppose. A friends house move was delayed & she had agreed to take on a kitten from somebody. Because of the delay she quite rightly didn't want this new kitten in a chaotic new house. So we looked after it for 2 weeks while she settled in. My cat actually let the kitten try to suckle her! This is why I am keen on getting a kitten because I know mine has a strong maternal instinct. The last thing I want to do freak mine out!

I think that it is always a gamble with any new animal/human. Nature v nurture. Its quite amazing how thing do turn out. I have seen with family friends who have adopted children from tiny babies who also have their own biological children how the nature nurture thing can throw up some surprises!

Yes thats true what Clowny has said about diiferent temperaments. And about how they turn out as adults....thats one of the arguments I usually use to people who are dead set on having a kitten.

I would defiently try and go down the rescue route though (not just because I'm always banging on about rescues honest! ? ;D)...it means if it doesnt work out then you would be able to return the cat/kitten, whilst if you get one privately then its an issue of what to do with him/her then.

Have you ever considered fostering Hils? AARU are always desperate for new people, especially at this time of year.

Not thought of fostering cats but have contacted the AARU before to offer my services & they were so rude I never persued it again! I said I would foster Small furries, indoor birds & possibly the odd rabbit. They as good as laughed in my face (if you can do that down the phone!). I did send an email offering help but never got a reply.

I would be happy to try them again or if you are in close contact with them mention me!

Will Pm with my number incase you've don't have it anymore.

Thats horrible Hils! How rude!

I will have a chat to the nice lady I know and get back to you if thats ok? I know they were asking people to look after small animals- things like hedgehogs so will see if I can find some details for you. xx
