Hi,i was wondering....how many guinea pigs can live in a kids pool?:)?/

what would it be made of ? you dont mean and inflatable one do you ? again it depends on the size. as other have said on your other thread min of 2ftx4ft for a pair regardless of where they are during the day

we made our big C&C cage for just 40pounds and its 5ftx3ft big ! mine 2 are in that during the late afternoon/night and then out in a big run in the day (weather permitting that is !)

I'm not sure a kids pool would be suitable, theyd chew their way out.have you thought about buying the grids and making a cc cage they look great and you can make them as big as you need

I agree with daleksarah...They could easily chew there way out and not I'm sure the material kids pools are made off would be suitable as in if they did start chewing it it might make them ill if they actually ate some....

I live in america...and I'm 12....so my mom wont get any other cage material for them(she said that the sizes we have now are fine).....and i cant afford a c&c cage!:red

have you thought about maybe when the babies are born to see if any of your friends want them, that way you still see them and hear how theyre doing and you and your friends can talke about all the things the piggies get up to?
or maybe you could look through ads and see if anyone is getting rid of a cage, quite often you see ads like that, you could also put up notices in vets or shops to see if anyone has a cage for you,ive got an old hutch you couldve had but i wouldnt fancy the postage over to you!ha ha

Kiddie pools have a floor that is rather bumpy, it is going to make cleaning a nightmare. You would have to lay something over the bottom, bedding and fleece can both be very expensive since you can't use pine or cedar (two of the cheapest). If you just put them on the plastic, there will be nothing to absorb the wee, and then you will wind up with fungus' on them or the pool, not to mention the smell on your pigs and pool. Plus, they need something with traction (i have seen mine skid out on the linoleum floor and I don't think they like it).

All said, you could get away with a C&C cage if you go to bed bath and beyond you can get an entire package for only $15 (you would be better to have two) and if you go to any sign making shop you could probably get the floor for free if you tell them what you need it for, if not free then incredibly cheap.

I think the bigger question is does your mom realize that the piggies are very delicate and require a very specific type of enviroment in regards to space and what it is made of and lined with? Can you get her on here so we can tell her? Guinea pigs can get sick very quickly if not properly taken care of, and if you cannot afford $30 - $50 for a cage, wait until the vet charges you $115 for a visit for their teeth, toes, eyes, lungs or any other ailment from a long list that piggies can suffer from. Trust me, it will be much less expensive in the long run if you guys flip for a proper cage.

I am not trying to be critical, you made a very good choice to come on here and ask and clearly it shows you care for your pigs welfare, I hope you can find a better solution for the housing! Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks SO much guys!ill try to get her on here so she can see for herself!also my guinea's live in my room...and i dont have much room for a huge c&c cage....and i could keep them down stairs but then we wouldnt get to see them as much...Also my mom doent really care about them so she refuses if they get sick or somthing to take them to the vet..so i have to pay the vet bills...even though I'm 12 i do have a job but i dont get payd more than 20 a week! What should i do?!

Hi again Alexis,
for a room effective C&C cage you can do 2 storey so they still have lots of room but take up less floor space,
to tell you the truth if you currently have 4 pigs and have another possible 4 coming thats 8 possibly pigs with very limited vetcare,
at your age you really need your parents on board to help with the financial part of piggies.
i have 8 and last week i took two to the vet as one was balding and the other had a lump
to get the mite test, lump testing, checkup it cost me over $200 and that is by far my cheapest bill ever for my pigs.
Basically what I'm saying is i dont agree that pigs are at all healthy animals,i have had quite a few issues with mine so i know how easily they can fall ill,
usually when they do it happens quickly so its up to us to make sure they get checkups and good vetcare.
if you cant persuade your mum to help out with money i would say you need to rehome a few or possibly they whole lot,
i know its not what you want to hear but even just having 2 pigs can result in mass bills and $20 a week is nowhere near enough to prepare even if you save it every week.
if you do keep the pigs i advise you save every cent you get.
the way I'm looking at it is if you canty get them correct housing or vetcare then maybe they need to be in a home that can take care of those needs.
no offence intended xxxxxxx

Hi....i just talked to my mother and she said that she will compromise with me!she said that she will buy enough material to make 4 larg C&C cages as long as i pay half the price!she also said that if they need vet care then agian ill have to pay half the price!so were going to give one of the pups away to a very good friend of my moms...and then keep the rest...do you think all of thats good?because id feel terrible having to rehome them all!so what do you think?:red

That sounds like a good compromise. As to keeping the babies - please don't take this the wrong way, as you sound like you care very much for your animals - but if you are to keep them, they could live 5-7 years, and you're 12 now, right? You really need to think whether when you are 17, 18, 19, if you're going to have time to care for all of those piggies, along with school, job, love life! :) I wasn't allowed any new pets at your age for that very reason, and although at the time I thought my parents were wrong, when I was 17 and spending every waking minute with my first boyfriend, I was glad they had had the sense to look to the future!

It doesn't make you a bad person if you find good homes for the babies, if it's in their best interests. Then you can do the best for the pigs you are keeping.

Good luck whatever you decide, and do put some pictures of your piggies on here!

i think thats a good start,
the best thing in my opinion is to rehome all babies and just keep your 4 adults, then you will have 2 bonded sows and then could neuter your boar to go in with mummy pig,
that way vet bills are less, you can give them great big houses and not be stuck for room, less money on veg/pellets/hay/ and all other piggy expenses.Just remember that just one piggy getting ill could cost hundreds and at $20 a week you may find it hard to meet even half of that, the unfortunant thing is the more piggies you have the increased chance there is of more illness so its better to keep your numbers lower and provide top care for the pigs you have rather than very average care for more pigs.
I know that your probably all excited about the baby pigs as they are just so cute,
but even if you do rehome them you still get 6-8 weeks with them when they are bubs before they go to new homes without 8-10 years of room and financial drain.
i think you should try give it alot of though and really think about the piggies
goodluck xxxxxxxx

None - they dont swim very well

I know this in jest, but actually, swimming therapy (with trained human supervision, don't try it with your pigs at home, folks!) is often used to help in rehabilitation for pigs with injuries by some vets and rodentologists, and they can indeed swim :)

Ali, you sound like a lovely piggie mum who is keen to do the right thing for the pigs :) There is some good advice on here and hopefully you will be able to get it sorted soon.

indeed it was in jest. You know me so well

appologies for those who don't

early start for me and not enough caffine yet

welcome to the world pf piggie slaves - it will enrich your life no end

My pigs swim like champs! I don't know if they like it, but they are so good at it!

I think that you are a very special person, you so obviously care the very best about the welfare of your piggies, and it's lovely to see that you are willing to ask for advice, then act on it - it will be sad to part with the babies, but you know the homes you choose for them will be good, and you'll still have your own piggies that you clearly love so much.

Do let us see pictures of your c&c cages when you finish them.
:)p
