Hi everyone,

I am having a nightmare.

I’ve posted a thread here before regarding bladder stones and was recommended Sherwoodd urinary tablets which I have been giving my boy.

He is a 3yr old boar.

He has lost a lot of weight in a week the vet said about 50grams. I’m so worried and am in two minds as he has kidney stones but also a large bladder stone.

I’m not looking for medical advice more just some support and suggestions.

He is on 7 prescribed medicines (metacam, gabapentin, marbocyl, vetpro healthy urinary tract, cerenia, paracetamol and Buscopan - prescribed today)

He is in a lot of pain when toileting and I was wondering if anyone else had experienced kidney stones in their piggies and what happened?

I’m thinking having him pts will be the right thing for him as 6 prescribed medicines one of them 3 times a day and two of them twice a day just isn’t sustainable. I will however do whatever is necessary to keep him with me as selfish as that sounds.

I lost his brother in April and that was heartbreaking, I don’t want to just give up on him.

Any suggestions and experiences welcome. I’m just at a loss of what to do now.

Thanks 🥲

I am very sorry 😞 As far as I am aware, the surgery to remove kidney stones is very tricky it may even not be possible but he won’t be able to live with them or with a bladder stone either, has your vet suggested surgery to remove it the bladder stone? He will sadly be in a great deal of pain 😞 It may be kindest to let him go if he is in a lot of pain and surgery isn’t an option. I know that’s not the news you want to hear 😞 x

Hi

HUGS

To my knowledge, kidney surgery in guinea pigs has not been successful so far the few times it has been attempted; at least in the cases we have come across. Medical treatment for stones is also very still very hit and miss; you are lucky if you are one of the few where it works but it often doesn't. I am very sorry to say. :(

You may unfortunately have to look at how far you are willing to take your boy, as painful and heartbreaking that is for you - and for him. There are some areas in guinea pigs which are medically still out of reach; kidney failure and stones are one of them.

I really wish I had better news.

I had a 3.7year old Zak who had Kidney stones. The exotic vet said he could have a nephrectomy, but his chances were poor, due to other kidney not being favourable..
You are in a very difficult position.
I agree with Weibke.
I'm so sorry.hugs.
