My three girly piggies live in a big hutch in my garden but I'm always worrying about them keeping warm when it's cold out. At the moment I'm just giving lots of hay and hugs but is there anything else I can do to make sure they're not getting cold?
I have loft insulation stapled onto my hutch (which is kept in the shed) and I have two blankets over the top of the hutch to cover the doors, you can also use a duvet, and when my boys were outside I put a shower curtain over the top of the blankets to keep out the rain. Or you could try a hutch snuggle, but they can be pricey. Also I'd suggest putting a cardboard box, with cut out entrances, into the hutch for extra warmth.
Yeah, they do sit in the pitch black, i don't think their any other way round it unless you bring them indoors or you use a snuggle cover: http://www.petsathome.com/shop/dandelion-den-hutch-snuggle-by-scratch-and-newton-36837? The piggies don't seem to be too bothered being in the dark least they're warm and snuggley I suppose. I just found this a far cheaper alternative to a snuggle cover!
Haha! Thank you , I think I will find out if I can throw a quilt over their hutch because it sounds like it will work! Also, I'm wondering if there's anything
I can actually put inside the hutch too, but then I worry about them using it as a toilet area.............
Hmmm I made my boys cosy cups to snuggle into, or you could put in (if you want to wash it after) a fleece throw, which they can snuggle into or snuggle under if you do go with the washing idea I'd suggest putting any cosies, or fleece towels into an old pillow case tied before putting it in the machine - it saves your machine becoming clogged with hay and hair! Or you could try wooden hideys/ plastic igloos / boxes or you could try a heat pad? http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/...ions_pillows/heat_pads_and_heat_pillows/59060
Otherwise lots of hay should do the trick, and too keep up their fat reserves in the winter, put porriage oats into their pellet mix
I wrapped folded fleece blankets around my boys' beds and put loads of hay in - the only problem is I hardly saw them as they were obviously too warm and snuggly to come out! They've also got a hutch snuggle (from P@H) which I pull down at night.
