I’ve been really struggling recently keeping my senior Peruvian dry. She likes to lie underneath the hay bag all day, toilets there and doesn’t move. She’s fine in her health otherwise.

Ive trimmed her bum hair super short, I change out the pee pad and dirty hay under the hay bag twice or three times a day but she still ends up really wet down there.

She’s bedded on a absorbent fleece liner, with water proof pee pads in high traffic areas. I’ve also started to place double upped towels to add an extra layer of absorption on top of the peepads, again changed out two to three times a day.

Does anyone have any advice on keeping her clean? She’s also getting weekly bum baths to keep her clean but I just feel so bad for her that she sits in wetness all day.:vom:

Also pictures because she’s just so darn cute! :3

Hi!

You may find the practical care tips (including bedding tips) and help with possible complications in our mobility guide very useful; it is pretty comprehensive and also covers the kind of issues that older piggies not moving around much are throwing up: Looking after guinea pigs with limited or no mobility

If the peeing is somewhat excessive, you may want to have her vet checked for potential kidney problems. They are not at all uncommon in elderly piggies.

I second vet bed. It’s brilliant at staying dry on the surface and letting the moisture get to the absorbent layer below. Plus it’s really comfortable for them. I used it will all my senior buns and have some for my older pig boy too.

We also use vet bed since it was recommended to us on the forum. We have two 6 year old piggies. When they get that old, they seem to sleep a lot more I’ve noticed. Mine will fall asleep eating hay and then wake up and carry on eating like nothing happened. Since using the vet bed, I find they enjoy laying on it and getting really snuggled down. I have one who used to wheek every time he stepped on it! One of our piggies would frequently get a wet bum from sitting in his wee but I haven’t noticed this happen since we started using the vet bed about a month ago.
