hi,

i’ve built my pigs a large pen. it has 3 large compartment each suitable for 3 pigs but i’ll be putting 2 in each. it is made of wood and the deviders are made of mesh. it will be on carpet with tarp on top of the carpet. then i’ll be putting towels and reusable puppy pads. they have snuggly hideys, snuggle safes and lots of hay. this is all inside of a huge shed (bigger than my actual house) and it doesn’t have heating. the floor is made out of 2 massive slabs of concrete. i’m worried that my pigs who are used to living in my bedroom will get cold. will it be okay and what can i do to make it nicer for them in the winter.

thanks (:

Piggies who are used to being indoors should not be moved outside during the winter. It should wait until spring when it gets warmer and then move them out. The sudden fluctuation in temperature is not good for them. Piggies need to be kept warm - ideally around 18 degrees. Anything below 15 is getting too cold, particularly for piggies who are only used to being inside.
My piggies live outside in my shed (year round) and have a hutch within the shed. I unfortunately can’t heat my shed and it takes a lot of work to keep them warm enough. They are bedded on a thick layer of hay in winter so they can snuggle into it, along with other warm houses and cosy items. They also have four snugglesafes between the two piggies. I then have two blankets and a thermal hutch cover over their hutch. I then throw over an old duvet over the whole thing. The inside of their hutch (with these measures stays around 12-15 degrees, but in the shed itself, it can get much colder (meaning they don’t get let out of their hutch on very cold days)
If you are only having wire sides with no roof, then I can imagine it being very difficult to keep them warm enough in an unheated space.
