For the winter, I have a fleece beds for both of my pigs that I put under their huts and a towel on top of it. Our house is heated all the time but the open space sometimes makes it a bit colder downstairs. I’ve noticed that one of my pigs, Jumpy, has been laying on a bed of hay I put for him to eat instead of his bed. Should I switch to using the hay for his bedding or should I just leave both options there? Also, is that enough to keep my pigs warm or should I add more?

My piggies are outside! They are 4 yrs old and snuggle in plenty of hay

I have indoor piggies who have boxes for hides. But they sometimes sleep out in the open. One in particular likes to sleep in the hay. So that’s fine if he wants to do that. Sleeping in the open is also a good sign that he trusts you that little bit more.

When you say cold, how cold does it get? You could get some snuggle safe heat pads for nights where the temp is likely to drop even more - they can be warmed in the microwave.

I'd give him both options. Mine love to snuggle in their hay boxes and piles but they also like to sleep in their fleece hides and tunnels. My house can be a bit drafty if it's windy as we have poorly fitting doors. I put a fleece blanket over the cages on windy nights and spare bits of corex down the sides of the cages to block any draft. We also have snugglesafes for very cold weather, the heating thermostat is left on at 15 at night in case of a hard frost.

Not as cold as it is outside or as cold as a refrigerator for an example, just a tiny bit chilly. If it ever gets very cold I’ll look into heat pads for them!

Ooh the blanket over the cages is a smart idea. Do you put the blanket over the entire cage or just a small portion of it?

I put it over the top and down the side that's nearest the door in case of draft from under the kitchen door from the back. I also use draft excluders across the doorways at night, we have curtains across the front door and back door.
