Does anyone do anything special to keep hay off and out of the carpet? I was thinking about buying a cheap rug or two to put under the cages and where I keep the bags of hay.

The vacuum doesn't do a great job of grabbing the hay from the carpet and of course as soon as you grab all of it up, the next time you serve hay its all back again rolleyes. Wanted to get a few ideas (if there are any to share) before I invested in a couple of rugs!

Marie :)

I dont have any advice, but I also have this problem. I will surely be keeping an eye on this thread. :)

Why don't you put a sheet of plastic underneath.......then it will be easy to vacuum the hay off it :)
or put an old sheet down in front of the cages and when you need to go shake it out........... just a few thoughts :)

Don't want to put plastic down because when I step on it it will crinkle and set the piggy sirens off because they think they're getting fed rolleyes :)) .

I have actually tried the sheet before but it is easily wrinkled and wrinkles to the point of disappearing, therefore very ineffective. :))

Walking between 3 cages in a short amount of space doesn't help at all! :))

I was thinking if I got a couple of rugs I could shake them out but they're heavy enough to not wrinkle up easily if at all. Thanks for the feedback, though!

yeah i can see what you mean re the crinkling noise :(|):(|)
regards the rug make sure then that it's not long pile get the shortest pile and then easier to shake off or vacuum :) or use a stiff broom and sweep off

Will do! Going to Wal-Mart tomorrow (even though they are 24-hour, it's almost 10pm and getting ready to get in my jammies!)

Hopefully they'll have something big and cheap! :)) Of course that also means tomorrow I've got a long day of pulling strings of hay from the carpet! :))

Good idea on the linoleum! I saw at my local Dollar Tree that I can get 9 12" x 12" squares for $1. I think I'm going to pick up a few packages, bring them home and attach them to a laid-out sheet, side by side. That should cover the area under both cages for at least 12-18" away from the edges. It will be easy to sweep and wipe up any water bottle leaks, plus I will be able to fold it up into a pretty small bundle if I want to bring it outside to hose it off. I'm so excited to try this! I spend so much time sweeping, picking at and wiping up hay and spills. :))

I've always had laminate flooring in my room. I got carpet once and it only lasted a few weeks and had to be lifted because I don't think carpet is practical atall when using hay. With the flooring can just give it a quick brush plus it's better for my asthma.

I've got hay everywhere. Partly because it drops off me and the dog treads it in from outside.

Since having both bunnies and guineas bonding inside, it's absolutely everywhere. Going to tackle it this afternoon. I bought a new Sebo X4 Pet hoover. If that doesn't shift it nothing will. I did sweep up a lot of it with one of those long handled rubber brush things though. Got it from Wilkos.

Never thought a Dollar Tree would sell linoleum! :)) I was thinking I'd have to go to Lowes! Luckily Dollar Tree and Wal-Mart are right next to each other...

Just a look at my problem...sure its like some of your's :))

I dunno what you think of this idea but how about some baby blankets? just cheap run of the mill ones. lay them down then you can just pick it up and shake it off outside. I do this to the fleece when I clean the poop off. Makes life so easy. I personally have my hay in a coroplast box I made that way it doesn't sit on the carpet at all ( or in my case hardwood floors lol) hope this helps.

I have laminate flooring so I can easily sweep up the hay/megazorb I drop. I'm really dopey when it comes to transporting hay from the haybox to the cage so... yeah... I tend to sweep it up every other day, probably to the annoyance of my flatmates :D

It would work the same as the sheets I've tried, when I step on them and with all the traffic between my 3 cages in a short area they bunch up too much. :( Thanks for the suggestion, though!

The problem is when I take the hay from the bag to the cage :)) no matter how careful I try to be, it fails! :p

I have laminate florring which is a blessing! But poor old Lennie (rip) wouldn't walk on it so had to have a big old mat and vet bed laid out for him like stepping stones :))

I used to have lino underneath the c&c cages but was horrified when I discovered mould on it from a build up of condensation between the correx and the lino, so be careful if you do use it. I now have the c&c's on an MDF structure with no problems at all! Thank goodness, no hoovering hay up from carpet, it must be a nightmare :o

No matter how hard i try to keep hay contained i fail - it has a life of it's own & jumps everywhere rolleyes

:)) I agree with that! Just want to contain it a little bit more!

Didn't get a chance to go to Lowes, had the little bro with me and he whines and complains when I go there rolleyes, so will have to wait until my Mom will go with me since some of the pigs are her's and I am borrowing her vacuum, currently! :))

Turns out my mom had quite a bit of linoleum left over from when she had her bathroom done a few years ago and another random scrap piece. It doesn't look pretty and it doesn't all match, but it'll get the job done! :(|)

It's already doing a good job! And didn't cost a penny! :(|)

We picked the hay from the carpet before laying it all down and it took about an hour and a half! rolleyes
