Hi there,

We are currently going through loads of bedding options to try and find the softest, most absorbant but affordable option.

Started with Guineadad fleece which was brilliant but we don't fully understand our rented washing machine and the option turned a bit complicated. Pigs absolutely loved it.

Switched to Aubiose which is extremely absorbant but not that soft for them.

Currently on Medibed with a layer of Aubiose underneath. Medibed seems very soft and will do for short term.

Have seen the Fitch bedding which is what I really want, but in order to make it affordable at £15 a bale you need to buy 12 bales of which we don't have the room.

Have now seen this Kaytee clean and cosy but I can't work out how long a bag (85 litres) would last? Does anyone have any experience of using it with a similar cage size......we have C+C 6x2 cage with a 2x2 loft.

Thank you very much and if there is a highly rated soft, affordable option instead that goes a long way then please let me know.

Sorry by how long it lasts I mean how long does a bag last if we cleaned out our 6x2 + 2x2 loft once a week.

Thank you everyone!

Is that bag size correct, 85 litres? Our packs of Kaytee clean and cosy are 8.2 litres (says it expands to about 25 litres). I reckon the 8.2 litre pack would do 2 cage cleans, if you put it everywhere... we cover a 5x2 grid area of our cage with it plus we have a fleece area, we dont bother putting anything but hay and newspaper in the loft!

Thank you for the reply. The 85l is the expanded size, the base size is 28.3 litres :). That's really helpful thank you. With your set up and the areas you place your Kaytee how many cage cleans does that last? We never thought to put different bedding down at the same time!

Personally I think it depends on the colour, I found the 85Ltr pack in natural did 3 or 4 cleans of a 120cm cage, whereas in the white it only did 2. But I do use it in a really thick layer, due to it being for my wobbly special needs girl. That being said ive been using a layer of the apple orchard colour over a layer of good quality woodshavings lately and thats lasted 4 cleans from a 25ltr bag.

We get 2 cage cleans from the smaller pack, but we clean out twice a week and have deep hay over a lot of it in our 3x2 "hay room", we only have the plain bedding in our 2x2 kitchen area. Deeper would probably last longer and have fewer cleans... though it all depends on how many piggies of what gender and how clean they are! Also if you top up after removing soggy bits during spit cleans... so many variables :)
Its a good floor substrate though, and doesnt stick to fleece much if you have both, thats why we ditched wood shavings!

How about just towels and 100% polyester fleece, could sew 2 together if can’t find large enough? Get a few and change it every 3 days. Easy enough for me anyways 👍🏻

Thank you for the contributions, it sounds like it would be worth a try after getting through the Medibed. @Piggie101 that is such a great idea!

Could I roughly expect the same from Fitch (20kg bag) and finacard (their big bale) in terms of how long they would last?

I would be interested to hear good bedding combinations too (e.g we are using newspaper on the bottom, Aubiose on top of that and Medibed on top of that). Too early to tell if the pigs get on with it!
