New Born Pup
Hello! I am Kay, currently the manager for five wonderful girls. I might as well post about them here since I always seem to have stories to share and things to discuss. I love them and have found a great deal of reward in looking after them, being their human, and learning about such amazing little animals. Anyway, I'll try to keep the introductions short.
Inca & Caterpillar
This pair of long-haired bonded sisters entered my life on a warm May 2023. I was visiting an older friend to see the colt her mare had given birth to, and she had these fluffballs out on her lawn. They did not have quite as much hair then, having been shaved due to neglect by their previous owner. Having never really interested in guinea pigs, I asked about them and found myself drawn in by their story. The sisters had belonged to the daughter of someone my friend went to college with, but she did not care for them. Besides not brushing them—which led to matted fur, my friend had to shave off—their cage went unclean which resulted in maggots. The mother found out and brought them to my friend, who spent two months caring for them, getting them back to a healthy weight, and otherwise overseeing their care. In the end, my friend offered them to me, and for some reason, despite not needing any new pets and knowing nothing about guinea pigs, I said yes. They came to live with me and, in our year together, have taught one another a great deal.
Estella
Found in a box outside a local pet store by the same friend who gave me Inca and Caterpillar, Estella came into my life rather suddenly. I got the call about her on a cold night in January of 2024. I got in my car and drove to my friend's house to pick her up without questioning whether or not I needed another furry friend. She was still young but very sweet and wanted to be held and loved. Also, as I would discover, Estella was an escape artist. Using the hay feeder as a ladder, she would climb out of the cage to run around and scare my parent's poor 17lbs cat Theo. She also enjoys riding on your shoulder—although she's a little too big now—and otherwise finding high places from which to look down upon her subjects.
Rosa & Poppy
I was looking for a dog... I got two more guinea pigs instead. No, that's not a joke. I was browsing the site of our local animal shelter for a dog when I ran across a profile for this pair of bonded females. They'd been there for over two months as the rescue required they go to a home knowledgeable about their needs and with no children under twelve. I knew I had to bring them to a forever home when I saw the pictures and drove over to pick them up. A local family had found them in a wildlife park, apparently the victims of a 'release'. I added a third story to my piggy metropoles and brought them home to stay.
That's everyone! They are overall happy and healthy, although convinced they are being starved. Estella may get her own thread elsewhere due to concerns about her well-being as a single, but otherwise, that's my happy little herd.
