Hello,

I have been looking after my guinea pig Hector after a spay she got done 2 weeks ago to remove her large ovarian cysts and swollen uterus which was seeping fluid out of her. She has been slowly recovering for the past two weeks as it was a much larger op than the vet anticipated and I have been to the vet every third/fourth day for check ups.

She had gained back her appetite until about 5 days ago when she relapsed and went completely off her food so I have been giving her appetite stimulate from the vet every 8 hours and syringe feeding and now she is pooping again and gaining weight, but today I noticed that she has started to let out a low pitched moan/squeak each time she does and hunching up.

She will be going to the vets tomorrow morning for a check up and I am obviously going to ask for them to check it out.

I have given her a small dose of painkillers (Loxicom) to try and help and she seems more relaxed now, but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this in relation to a post op spayed guinea pig?

Please as your vet for a scan and/or urine test. it could be an issue with the operation (infection) or it could be a UTI (urinary tract infection) as a result of a lowered immune system and the current up and down of weather in the UK. You can safely double the dose of loxicom for the short term if necessary until you see the vet.

Here are our post-op care and syringe feeding tips, which you may find helpful:
